Job Summary

This 20-hour (0.5 FTE) position in Pediatric Endocrinology will provide clinical services to children and adolescents who present to Child and Adolescent Gender Services, assessing appropriateness for gender affirming medical intervention following WPATH Standards of Care criteria.

Duties include:

  • Provide clinical assessments and ongoing psychotherapy for youth who present to the clinic, incorporating a thorough gender history into a comprehensive diagnostic assessment. Develop recommendations for ongoing treatment and/or medical intervention, and refer youth to appropriate ongoing resources in the community as needed.
  • Assist in program development efforts of Child and Adolescent Gender Services, regularly collaborating with members of the multi-disciplinary treatment team, as well as internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Participate in ongoing training and application of existing research and current best practices for assessing and treating gender concerns in childhood and adolescence.
  • Participate in the education and training of students and staff, with specific focus on best practices for working with transgender youth.


  • The position requires maintaining accurate, up-to-date records, and the ability to make case presentations accurately and concisely.
  • Patient work will include both face-to-face and phone contacts, but the vast majority of work will be done face-to-face. Some ongoing therapy with patients and their families is also part of this position, in addition to one time, in depth assessments. Psychoeducation, safety planning, assisting family members in understanding and supporting the patient, and referrals to community resources are some of the additional duties of this position.

Required Qualifications*

A Master’s degree in Social Work from a school accredited by the Council of Social Work Education is necessary. A current LMSW license to practice social work in the State of Michigan is required. LLMSWs will not be considered for this position. Minimum two years of mental health diagnostic experience using DSM-5 and mental health treatment experience using evidence-based interventions.

Desired Qualifications*

  • The ideal candidate will have in depth clinical social work experience, and significant experience in the clinical assessment and diagnosis of children and adolescents.
  • Experience working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender youth is desirable.
  • The ability to quickly develop rapport with a diverse patient population, and efficient, accurate assessment of patient needs and effective case dispositions is necessary.
  • Excellent communication skills and proven ability to work and communicate effectively with a large multi-disciplinary team and a diverse patient population are essential.
  • Effective organizational skills, flexibility, self-motivation, the ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks in a fast-paced medical clinic, and independent, sound decision-making are necessary for success in this position.
  • Computer proficiency, participation in team meetings, and the ability to handle a caseload of patients with complex medical and/or psychiatric histories are required.
  • Experience with evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions (e.g., CBT, PST, ACT, DBT) and familiarity with brief, structured interventions (e.g., Motivational Interviewing, Behavioral Activation) along with a basic knowledge of psychopharmacology are clinical skillsets pertinent to this position.

Work Schedule

Work days will include two to three days of the Monday through Friday workweek, with Friday as one of the required days, and hours between 8:00-4:30. The position is based at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.

Underfill Statement

This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Advancement through the career ladder at the Expert or Clinical Scholar Level is required for placement in the MSW Senior Classification
