The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 450 employees and a revenue 2017 of 470 million SEK. It comprises eight divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.
Division of Clinical Geriatrics conducts research focusing on cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aging related disorders, and education, among other medical graduates. The research is multi-faceted and is in close collaboration with leading institutions and clinics worldwide. The research is clinically oriented with an emphasis on diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Some focus areas include lifestyle factors, prevention and treatment studies, imaging methods, and registry studies. The activities are multidisciplinary and include medical research and research in the specialty engines psychology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and nursing. We have a close cooperation with the Theme Aging at Karolinska University Hospital. The division is now opening a one year postdoctoral researcher position.
Postdoctoral researcher to be hired will be working in the research group Nordic Brain Network led by professor Miia Kivipelto and consists of around 40 people. The group focuses on clinical and translational research on prevention and treatment of cognitive impairment, dementia/Alzheimer’s disease and other age-related conditions. The postdoctoral researcher will work especially with the projects focusing on dementia among the oldest old age groups, and the late-life risk factors for dementia and functional limitations. Prof Kivipelto is also Director of Research and Development for Theme Aging at Karolinska University Hospital providing an innovative platform to further develop and test evidence based methods for elderly persons with cognitive impairment, multimorbidity and frailty.
The main duties include coordinating the new data collection for the large prospective cohort study (CAIDE 85+) with over 40 years follow-up. The project to be developed is mainly focused on investigating the life-course determinants of dementia and other age-related health outcomes including mobility, functional capacity and frailty. A person also takes part in analyzing and reporting the data and planning implementation of the research evidence into practice. Writing grant applications is one of the duties.
The CAIDE85+ study is coordinated at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) in Kuopio, Finland and is a joint collaboration between Karolinska Institutet and National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), Finland.
Therefore, the candidate must be willing to travel internationally. Knowledge of Finnish language is seen as a strong advantage due to Finnish data material and data collection among Finnish participants.
The successful candidate should show a high level of responsibility and independency and be able to work in a multidisciplinary team. Moreover, the candidate is expected to have knowledge and expertise in aging research and a background in the field of gerontology, geriatric epidemiology and dementia research is seen as a strong advantage. Knowledge in cell and molecular biology or related fields is also seen as an advantage.
The candidate is expected to show independency in planning data gathering and analyses of population-based prospective datasets as well as manuscript and grant preparation. Previous experience in studying the oldest old age groups and data collection for survey research is seen as a strong advantage. Experience in writing ethical committee documents is also seen as an advantage.
A person is eligible to be appointed Postdoctoral researcher if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence. The persons appointed should primarily be the ones who have been granted a Degree of Doctor or have reached the corresponding competence no more than seven years before the end of the application period.
