Postdoctoral Studies in Molecular and Cellular Biology
Karolinska Institutet, The Department of Women's and Children's Health
The Department is organized in 10 divisions: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Surgery, Neuropediatrics, Pediatric Oncology, Neonatology, Reproductive Endocrinology, Neuropsychiatry (KIND), Reproductive and Perinatal Health. The divisions have separate scientific profiles and vary in size and have several research groups, dealing with both basic and clinical science.
The translational embryonal neural tumor research group is part of the Childhood Cancer Research Unit, Dept of Women’s and Children’s Health, Karolinska Institutet with our laboratory located at newly established Bioclinicum, Stockholm. We are four collaborating integrated research groups lead by Prof. Per Kogner, Assoc. Prof. John Inge Johnsen, Ass. Prof. Ninib Baryawno and Ass. Prof. Malin Wickström. The main focus of our research is to increase biological understanding of the embryonal tumors medulloblastoma and neuroblastoma in order to develop new therapies leading to better survival, less side effects and increased quality of life for children with these diseases. We are applying basic, translational and clinical approaches in our research. We use single cell technologies, bioinformatics, immunology and molecular biology as well as functional analysis and development of preclinical in vivo- and in vitro-models. We have extensive collaborations, access to our own biobank and the national clinical registry. Our research aims for direct clinical implementation when possible.
The postdoc projects
The current project will be focused on the descriptive and functional validation of data obtained from single cell RNA sequencing analysis of neuroblastoma tissue samples. The aim is to investigate the cellular and molecular landscape of tumor cells at the single cell level and mechanisms of communication between cells within the tumor microenvironment in order to search for resistance mechanisms and novel therapy options. Principal investigator for the proposed project will be Dr Baryawno in close cooperation with the rest of the research constellation.
Skills and personal qualities
Preferrably the successful candidate should have a PhD in life sciences obtained no earlier than 2017. Experiences with confocal microscopy, multicolor flow cytometry and molecular biology are essential. Experience in immuno-oncology, preclinical animal cancer models and basic bioinformatic analysis is a benefit but not essential. The ability to work with people of different backgrounds, and contribute to a project team is important. Applicants must be able to work independently and have good communication skills in English.
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.
The head of the department determines whether the previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
Type of scholarship
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis of the following criteria:
- Documented subject knowledge of relevance to the area of research
- Expressed interest in the proposed project
- Other documented experience relevant to the subject and planned project
- The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.
Terms and conditions
The position will be in the form of a two-year postdoctoral scholarship, with potential extension.
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:
- A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defense, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
- A complete list of publications
- A summary of current work (no more than one page)
- Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labor unions or student organizations, parental leave or similar circumstances
- Verification from the thesis defense committee or the equivalent (only if the thesis defense is scheduled within three months after the application deadline)
- Two letters of recommendation
- Personal letter
Karolinska Institutet is one of the world’s leading medical universities. Its vision is to significantly contribute to the improvement of human health. Karolinska Institutet accounts for the single largest share of all academic medical research conducted in Sweden and offers the country’s broadest range of education in medicine and health sciences.
The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet selects the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.
Pursuant to the regulations of the Swedish National Archives, applications are kept on file for two years after the appointment has gained legal force. The regulations do not apply to attachments that have been printed or otherwise published.
Karolinska Institutet strives to provide a workplace that has approximately the same number of women and men, is free of discrimination and offers equal opportunity to everyone.
