Job Description

Are you a technician looking for a challenging professional experience to further your career?  If so, joining CERN’s TTE programme may very well give you that challenge.  This position as an Electrotechnician is part of our prestigious TTE programme. 

The Electrical Engineering Group (EL) of the Engineering Department (EN) has the mandate to design, procure and operate CERN’s electrical power distribution networks. The CERN electrical network, supplied by 130 kV and 400 kV lines respectively from Switzerland and France, provides electrical power to a number of high-energy particle accelerators, large scale experimental areas, the Organization's computer centre and many office buildings on the various sites. The installed electrical power at the 18 kV level is rated at approximately 500 MVA.

The Network Operation Section (OP) is responsible for the operation of CERN's electrical distribution network: high and low voltage installations (400 kV, 66 kV, 20 kV, 18 kV, 3.3 kV, 400 V, 48V).

Functions

After a period of familiarization, as an electrotechnician in the Network Operation section, you will be responsible for the following operations associated with the procedures for the disconnection and isolation of high and low voltage equipment, and notably:

  • Prepare and carry out interventions on the high and low voltage electrical network, such as network reconfigurations, disconnection and isolation of equipment and making it safe, etc.;
  • Implement corrective measures (in the event of breakdowns or when safety or warning devices are triggered) and compile intervention reports and records;
  • Take delivery of new high-voltage and low-voltage systems; prepare and perform the associated commissioning tests;
  • Act as the technician responsible for the operations of one of the 10 areas of the CERN high and low-voltage electrical network;

Take part in the verification and follow-up of the conformity of contractors' activities and carry out inspections during interventions (maintenance contracts); issue certificates for work to be performed

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (https://home.cern/about/member-states);
  • You have a Technical Diploma in electro-technical field or equivalent (careers.cern/ttediplomas), and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;
  • If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;
  • If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme.
  • You should have at least a working knowledge of English or French.

Specific skills required for this job:

  • Commissioning, maintenance & operation of electrical distribution systems.
  • Commissioning, maintenance & operation of power systems (UPS) Maintenance and operation of safety systems).
  • Design of HV network & substations ; Knowledge of HV circuit breaker, HV transmission lines
  • Design of LV network & switchboards; Knowledge of 400V circuit breaker & fuses, design of safety networks, 48V, 400V, 3.3kV.
  • Knowledge of Diesel generators.
  • Use of Scientific and Engineering software packages.
