About the opportunity

Reporting to the Head of Medicine, you will operate in a senior role in providing clinical medical services undertaken by the Equine Unit of the UVTHC. To assist with clinical training and supervision of undergraduates veterinary students and postgraduates in the Equine Unit.

In this position, you will:-

  • Provide a specialist medicine service for primary accession, secondary and tertiary referral cases.
  • Participate in the out-of-hour roster
  • Grow the client base by excellent client and referring practice communications and service
  • Oversee the supervision or postgraduate clinical trainees (residents)
  • Contribute to pre-graduate teaching

  • Veterinary Degree registrable in NSW;
  • Excellent clinical skills
  • Ability to develop referral and primary accession practice
  • Willingness to mentor junior clinical staff
  • A willingness to provide clinical instruction to postgraduate and undergraduate students
  • Postgraduate  training and specialist registration in Equine Medicine

The School of Veterinary Science is a leading provider of Veterinary and Animal Science education, and a leader in scientific research. The School is part of the Faculty of Science. The School provides a range of undergraduate & postgraduate degree programs in veterinary & associated disciplines and is a leader in animal welfare and ethics.

The Equine Services Unit of the UVTHC provide a 24 hour hospital service, an equine ambulatory service and also serve the University as a clinical teaching facility for undergraduate veterinary students. The unit is made up of a unit head, senior equine surgical and medical specialists, surgical and medical residents and equine medical and surgical interns. All positions contribute to the clinical teaching of the undergraduate students. The Equine Services Unit strives to provide a high standard of veterinary specialist and general veterinary services to the general public, including the thoroughbred and harness racing industry.

The role of the Locum Veterinary Specialist in Equine Medicine is to assist the senior and junior staff within this unit, in all aspects of equine medicine. This position is designed to assist in the development and growth of the equine unit’s referral practice.
