TECHNICAL ASSOCIATE IInstitute for Medical Engineering and Science (IMES)-Bhatia Lab, to support research at the cutting edge of nanotechnology for the development of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to overcome drug resistance/drug delivery barriers in infectious disease.  Hands-on experimental work will be performed at the interface of microbiology and nanomedicine, where the main research responsibility will be planning and executing bacterial culture experiments under the supervision of a postdoctoral mentor. Bench responsibilities will include techniques applied to assess candidate antibacterial materials (microdilution, cytotoxicity, hemolysis), animal studies (bacteria inoculation, injections, breath collection, live animal imaging, tissue collection, processing tissues), mammalian and bacterial cell culture, microscopy, nanotechnology (peptide conjugation and analysis), and biology (FACS analysis, RT-qPCR, Western blotting).  Will also configure and operate laboratory apparatus/instruments used for standard tissue culture or molecular biology assays; perform animal surgical and husbandry tasks; read and record instrument data; tabulate data and keep detailed records; order chemicals, reagents, and laboratory supplies; attend meetings and planning sessions; facilitate equipment maintenance/repairs; and contribute to overall laboratory maintenance. 

Job Requirements

REQUIRED:  life sciences bachelor’s degree related to microbiology, bioengineering, infectious disease, cellular biology, and/or molecular biology; at least two years’ research experience (which may include undergraduate work) with related lab techniques; ability to solve complex problems and exercise judgment; willingness to learn new research/techniques; excellent organizational, critical thinking, and communication skills; ability to interact with people at all levels; and attention to detail.  Proven aptitude performing lab techniques including bacteria culture, animal handling, flow cytometry, and immunohistochemistry strongly preferred. Experience with mammalian and bacterial viability assays; animal infection models and imaging; and molecular techniques, e.g., cloning, PCR, and Western blotting desired.  Job #16791
