PhD in English Teachers’ Professional Development and Multilingualism
About the position
A position as PhD fellow in English teachers’ professional development and multilingualism is available at the Department of Teacher Education. The successful candidate will be employed on the project Acquisition of English in the multilingual classroom funded by the Research Council of Norway. The post is a fixed-term position from 1 July 2019 for three years.
The project’s primary objective is to examine acquisition of English by multilingual language learners in Norwegian schools. The secondary objectives include examining the acquisition patterns of English L3 in Norwegian classrooms.
The main focus will be on language awareness and language development, in particular the contrastive/comparative elements between the learners’ L1 and English for both spoken and written language at different age groups/levels of proficiency. We will also define ‘standards’ or levels of what should be expected at the different levels of proficiency/ages to fulfil the learning outcomes in the curriculum for English. We will examine teachers and learners’ cognitive awareness of the language learning process and we will examine how students on the Master program in English education can best contribute to professional development and carry out their own research projects in multilingual classrooms. The PhD fellow’s project and doctoral dissertation will focus on pedagogies for teaching multilingual learners of English, and how teachers use multilingualism as a resource in their teaching.
The PhD fellow will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Collect and analyze data that consist of classroom/teaching materials, observations and recordings of classroom interaction between students and teacher, teaching methods and strategies, and interviews with teachers
- Present project results at conferences and co-author reports and publications
- The successful candidate is expected to join the existing research project and network and contribute to its development
The PhD fellow’s academic work is to result in a doctoral dissertation that will be defended at the Faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD.
The successful candidate is obliged to follow the regulations that concern changes and developments within the discipline and/or the organizational changes concerning activities at NTNU.
The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a Master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in a relevant field or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.
The regulations for PhD programs at NTNU state that a Master’s degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the Master’s degree is required. The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant
The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 3 years. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD program in Educational Sciences at NTNU (https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phuv).
As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD program during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD program within three months.
Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
The successful candidate is required to live within commuting distance from The Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim.

- An independent research proposal for a PhD project (between 6 and 10 pages) firmly grounded within the aims of the research project, Acquisition of English in the multilingual classroom, mentioned above, and relevant to the specific focus of this PhD position.
