Faculty of Arts

Associate Professor – Director of Public Engagement in the Arts
£51,630 - £59,828 pa

The University of Wolverhampton has a long-standing commitment to public engagement and the promotion of civic values. This can be traced back to the nineteenth-century routes of the organisation in the Mechanics’ Institute and the Wolverhampton School of Art (est. 1851), both focused on promoting vocational pathways to opportunity for the working population of the region.

The Director of Public Engagement in Arts is an essential component in the Faculty’s strategy for engaging a diverse range of local communities in pipeline, developmental activities in the Arts and Humanities, which take forward the University’s commitment to broadening access in arts and culture and engaging a new generation of students who may previously have had limited exposure to opportunities in these areas.

This requires an ability to work across the Faculty’s subject disciplines, ensuring that learning, teaching and research underpin a broad programme of engagement activities across the region. It involves the leadership, organisation and implementation of strategic interventions that raise aspirations and awareness of the range of opportunities in these subjects and which engage new audiences. There will be a requirement for you to demonstrate the relationship between these activities and tangible growth in student applications.

The Faculty organises a wide range of public engagement events: public lectures, performances, installations, exhibitions, literature events, interactions with religious communities. These occur throughout the year, but especially during Artsfest, the annual community arts festival organised by the Faculty of Arts, which you will oversee.

You will be a highly experienced practitioner who is able to work across the arts.  You will have a track record of impactful public engagement and experience of working in/with universities.

For an informal conversation about the role, please contact the Dean of Faculty, Dr John Pymm on 01902 323236 or e-mail j.m.pymm@wlv.ac.uk.
