Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Perform routine administrative and patient care supportive duties in a Health System medical practice to assist medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients and ensure office runs smoothly.

JOB DUTIES

  • Ensures patient double identifiers. Collects patient data accurately per clinic policy * Pain * Allergies * Vital Signs * Patient education including learning needs and barriers to learning * Medications * Nutrition * Abuse and neglect * Brief history * Tobacco use * Best Practice/MU * Falls risk assessment * My Chart * Other population specific data as required to meet Meaningful Use criteria
  • Identifies and reports safety issues and initiates corrective action.
  • Performs patient medication review accurately and completely per chart audits and Maestro Care reports.
  • Recognizes, documents and reports basic abnormal findings to RN or provider for appropriate assistance. Documentation is complete, accurate and timely.
  • Meets all criteria for fully achieves and at least 75% of criteria for exceeds.
  • Serves as Maestro Care Super User Uses appropriate resources to individualize plan of care based on needs of patient.  
  • No documentation errors per year (DNE/NCIR/MAESTRO/POCT).
  • Implements a quality/safety initiative at the clinic level.
  • Provides active and visible leadership in achievement of Ambulatory/EOC/IC scores of 100% at least one quarter Fall Champion Joint Commission Liaison Infection Prevention Liaison Medication Safety Liaison.
  • Proactively takes actions to facilitate patient flow and identifies and resolves barriers Leads Clinic compliance activities (e.g., audits, PI projects, falls, safety rounds)
  • Make reminder calls to patients confirming appointments.  
  • Orders clinic supplies and monitors usage to avoid any unnecessary stock.
  • Demonstrates superior venipuncture accuracy rate (no labeling errors, no instances of blood collected in incorrect tubes, does documentation completed by the end of the day. As needed if the lab is not open.
  • Manages in basket per clinic specific policy. Has received no corrective action regarding clinical quality in current evaluation period.
  • Completes physician orders and follows practice specific nursing protocols within scope of practice
  • Provides patient care effectively and efficiently within scope of practice. Patients are properly prepared for clinic visits. Participates in clinic compliance activities (e.g., audits, PI projects)
  • Actively participates with clinic leadership to achieve Ambulatory/EOC/IC scores of >95% quarterly Utilizes patient safety principles in practice *
  • Rights of Med Safety (as appropriate to scope of practice and delegation) * JCAHO Patient Safety Goals * Hand Washing * Falls * Environment of care * Infection Control Meets Clinic Specific Target for Handwashing Recognizes actual or potential safety issues, notifies HCA and appropriately documents in SRS.

  • Effectively communicates with all customers using RELATE
  • Has received no corrective action regarding poor or lack of customer service in current evaluation period.
  • Presents professional appearance and demeanor with visible & appropriately worn ID badge
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal relationships with co-workers and providers.
  • Utilizes HEART communication for service recovery
  • Facilitates positive patient flow and works to resolve barriers. Patients properly prepared for clinic visit. Informs patients of increased wait times per communicating delays policy.
  • Maintains compliance with mandatory training initiatives/competencies * BLS * Safety Courses * Annual skills review * Point of Care testing * Medication updates * Clinic specific competencies * Computer/Maestro Care competencies Identifies own learning needs and seeks appropriate assistance
  • Obtains 10 CEs of continuing education credits per policy by credentialing agency and submits documentation to Health Center Administrator. Maintains continued competence according to AAMA or AMT guidelines.
  • Provides nurse manager with all documentation of continuing education efforts
  • Clinic meets financial targets on BSC for operational budget.
  • Personal behavior supports clinic’s achievement of financial targets. Completes charge capture documentation accurately and completely.
  • Completes tasks in a timely manner in order to prevent overtime.
  • Assists others to complete work to control overtime.
  • Manages clinic supplies, rotates stock and checks expiration dates to decrease costs.
  • Promotes a safe environment by ensuring equipment is maintained and serviced according to manufacturer recommendations and/or Duke policy to prevent downtime and result of lost revenue (Duke Core Value of Safety.)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Good customer service skills.
  • Work requires the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions generally acquired through a high school education and medical assistant programming.
  • Heavy lifting and the ability to transport stretcher and wheelchair patients may be required.
  • Working knowledge of sterile techniques and special procedures that are applicable to work performed.
  • Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients.
  • Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene and basic health and safety precautions applicable for work in a clinic setting.
  • Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions.
  • Age specific competencies.
  • Daily clinic preparation process; registration, scheduling, charge posting, order entry.
  • Able to document and communicate pertinent information
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and clinic staff .
  • Typing skills Medical terminology Levels II and III
  • Ability to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively

WORK CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to work under time pressures in a busy clinic/office environment.
  • Must be present on site for 8 hour shifts during standard business hours.
  • Must participate in group activities requiring interpersonal skills & cooperation.
  • Must work as late person when scheduled or according to business needs
  • Must be able to react quickly and immediately respond to emergencies.
  • Must be able to handle multiple assignments, conflicting demands & priorities.
  • Must maintain attention to detail over extended period of time.
  • Must be continually aware of variations in changing situations.
  • Must be able to move throughout office environment throughout day.
  • Must be able to lift 30 lbs.
  • Must be able to push/pull 30 lbs.
  • Must be able to carry 20 lbs.
  • Must be able to reach for objects by extending arms.

LICENSURE/ CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Level I -- Certification by AAMA or AMT required. BLS required.Level II -- Certification by AAMA or AMT required. Certification by AAMA preferred. BLS required. Education
