The External Relations Office of the School of Engineering at Stanford University is seeking an Assistant Director of Donor Relations. The Donor Relations team is responsible for planning and executing a broad range of stewardship and development communications activities designed to strengthen ties to the School of Engineering and enhance the desire of individuals to provide philanthropic support. Reporting to the Director of Donor Relations, you will work to implement a creative, consistent, and donor-centric stewardship and development communications strategy. Your responsibilities include:

  • Support projects that motivate prospects and/or steward existing donors, including drafting acknowledgments, stewardship reports and updates, proposals, and other communications to key groups of prospects and donors.
  • Develop a deep understanding of Stanford’s donor management database and financial reporting systems in order to execute funds management and other specialized stewardship tasks.
  • Execute on and maintaining accurate records of stewardship activity in accordance with the university’s stewardship standards.
  • Work with staff in development and financial offices across campus to coordinate stewardship activity and tracking.
  • Proactive monitoring of the stewardship needs of donors and helping to implement development communications and stewardship plans developed by fundraisers.
  • Produce communications for donor and stewardship events, including itineraries, briefings for the dean and faculty, invitations, correspondence, and other collateral.
  • Maintain a comprehensive repository of content from acknowledgements, gift proposals, briefings, priority papers, and news articles and assisting fundraisers in identifying compelling information to present to donors.
  • Collaborate with fundraisers and academic stakeholders across the school to shape philanthropic messages and effectively communicate those messages to donors and prospects.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Exceptional writing ability and flawless copy editing and proofreading skills.
  • Superb client management skills, including the ability to identify client needs and deliver creative solutions.
  • Excellent analytical and information management skills, including the ability to conduct research in multiple databases and systems and manage information using Excel and other applications.
  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, meet deadlines with minimal supervision, and proactively keep all collaborators informed of project progress.
  • Ability to listen and communicate clearly, concisely, and diplomatically with a range of audiences.
  • Sound judgment in situations requiring independent decision-making and in handling confidential and sensitive material.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • Experience in a fundraising organization, ideally in development communication or stewardship roles.
  • Experience in higher education, particularly complex research institutions.
  • Experience with relationship or prospect management systems.
  • Familiarity with InDesign and/or Photoshop.
