Postdoctoral Fellowship in Social Policies to Improve Maternal and Child Health in the U.S.

Associate Professor Margaret McConnell at the Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health is seeking a post-doctoral fellow to work with on several projects rigorously evaluating social programs to improve maternal and child health outcomes.
Dr. McConnell leads several active field trials evaluating policies seeking to improve maternal and child health in the US. She is currently leading a randomized controlled trial evaluating the scale-up of the Nurse Family Partnership across South Carolina which will complete enrollment of 6,000 study participants by early 2020. She also leads or co-leads initiatives to design and test innovative solutions that seek to improve maternal and child health by addressing often-ignored behavioral barriers such as limited time and resources on the part of new mothers. This work includes both primary and secondary data analysis and bridges the fields of economics and public health.
Dr. McConnell is seeking a highly-motivated and capable post-doctoral researcher to collaborate on this research agenda with the objective of generating research designs at the nexus of social science and maternal and child health with a particular focus on developing new analyses and grant proposals. Analyses will be predominantly quantitative and will use data from field trials, household surveys, and administrative data. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to collaborate and lead on developing study protocols, drafting grant proposals, designing research instruments, creating analytical frameworks, analyzing data and preparing manuscripts for publication.
Applicants should have a doctorate (MD, SD or PhD) or equivalent in medicine, economics, epidemiology, public health, health policy and/or management, global health, health systems, public policy or a related field.
Candidates should also have the following:
- experience with grant writing
- strong quantitative and analytical skills
- research experience
- high-level interpersonal and organizational skills
- demonstrated ability to work independently
- knowledge of maternal and child health outcome measurement.
The position is for one year, with the potential for renewal for an additional one to two years.
