The University of Michigan is engaged in a major presidential initiative to support and transform foundational courses - those large courses that introduce students to a major or discipline. To this end, in January 2018, the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) launched the Foundational Course Initiative (FCI). In the FCI, CRLT consultants spend three years working with instructional teams to reimagine these courses and promote the success of all students. Our vision is that University of Michigan’s Foundational Courses will be nationally recognized as a leading model for teaching and learning at scale and that they will play an important role in recruiting a diverse student body, supporting them all equitably, and creating the inclusive community we aspire to for U-M’s third century. The work of FCI is highly collaborative and team based. It provides opportunities for motivated individuals to develop and implement new knowledge about teaching and learning through the learning laboratory provided by teaching at scale at University of Michigan.
As FCI is expanding, CRLT seeks to welcome a new colleague to our growing team. We hope to recruit an individual with training and work experience in instructional technologies that support teaching at scale. Candidates from groups historically underrepresented in faculty development are encouraged to apply.
Listed below are some examples of the responsibilities of the successful candidate:
- Consult with the instructional team to identify and implement technologies that will support the pedagogical and learning goals of the team or address instructional challenges.
- Remain up to date with current trends in instructional technology relevant to the large course environment, research and explore different tools, report back on pros and cons of various options, and make informed recommendations
- Build relationships with technology experts on campus and off (ITS, AI, LSA-ISS, CAEN, etc.) to learn about and connect FCI courses to other technology support resources available
- Implement and/ or create specific technical solutions (apps, online quizzes, integration of different homework systems into Canvas, etc.)
- Train, support, and troubleshoot with instructors in their use of technologies
- Design studies and/or analyze data (e.g., click streams or video viewing logs) to quantify and interpret student engagement with technologies and study the impact of a technology
A completed Master’s degree; college teaching experience and experience working with students of diverse backgrounds and identities; faculty and/or Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) development experience; proven ability to collaborate in a decentralized and distributed work environment; a successful record of program development and implementation in instructional technology; ability to work effectively in settings of social and intellectual diversity; interpersonal skills that result in respectful and productive interactions and collaborations with a diverse population of students, staff, faculty, and administrators; excellent oral and written communication skills; exceptional organizational and management skills with the ability to set deadlines and prioritize multiple tasks; and sensitivity to teaching and learning needs at a major research university.
A completed Ph.D. degree, familiarity with current trends in education at scale, particularly in the undergraduate arena; familiarity with the literature on technology for teaching at scale; experience designing and delivering programs for a diverse set of university-based stakeholders (undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and staff); familiarity with the literature on faculty and GSI development and learning improvement, including course development and design; familiarity with the teaching and learning environment at the University of Michigan.
CRLT, founded in 1962, was the first university teaching center. CRLT provides comprehensive curricular and instructional development programs and is dedicated to the support and advancement of teaching and learning at the University of Michigan. CRLT instructional consultants partner with faculty members, graduate student instructors, the academic administration, and students in all nineteen UM schools and colleges to promote a university culture that values and rewards teaching, respects and supports differences, and encourages instructional environments in which diverse students can learn and excel.
