Stanford’s vice provost for student affairs is seeking an associate vice provost (AVP) for student development and support and dean of students who will join in shaping the future of the Division of Student Affairs and the university’s long-range vision for the student experience. Student Affairs’ mission is to educate students to make meaningful contributions as citizens of a complex world. The Division is a diverse organization of professionals dedicated to the development and well-being of all Stanford students and to support of the university’s educational mission. 

JOB PURPOSE:

The AVP and dean of students serves as a member of the vice provost’s executive team and participates in leadership of divisional and university priorities in support of all Stanford students, with a near-term priority on advancing the division’s five-year focus areas defined in Our Most Important Work: Equity & Inclusion, Community & Belonging, Mental Health & Well-Being, Integrative Learning, and House in Order.

The AVP and dean of students provides strategic leadership and management in the development and care of students through individual support and case management, exercising delegated authority for policy and programmatic decisions. Core responsibilities include developing policy and accountability standards to ensure that all students and communities may thrive at Stanford; ensuring that student support processes are highly responsive to the diversity of our students including learner variability; maintaining standards of student and student-organization conduct; and overseeing divisional compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), state and federal laws and university policies. The AVP serves as a prominent, visible leader in the campus student community and models educational leadership, engagement, personal integrity and community values for students, faculty and staff. The AVP also serves as an institutional leader in the higher education community, as well as a link to Stanford alumni, parents and families.

The AVP is responsible for an annual operating budget of $7.3 million and achieves goals through a professional staff of approximately 45. Reporting units include: the Office of Community Standards, Undergraduate Case Management, Graduate Life Office, Office of Accessible Education, and Schwab Learning Center. As Stanford continues to plan for emerging student and organizational needs, this portfolio may also evolve. 

CORE DUTIES*:

  • As a member of the divisional executive team, provide leadership and vision for the Stanford student experience. Oversee the management of areas of responsibility. Direct staff and lead the achievement of the goals and vision of the inclusion, community and integrative learning units. Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, personal development for direct reports and accountable for the performance of employees.
  • Advise executive management on programmatic and policy development in the areas of purview, including counseling and influencing university leaders on issues that have university-wide impact.
  • Provide strategic direction, create strategic plans and oversee the long-range vision, planning, implementation and assessment of a variety of programs and initiatives, primarily for students, that provide care and support through individual support and case management. 
  • Champion major initiatives and lead complex high-visibility process redesign and innovation projects in the areas of purview that impact student and staff experiences and academic department functions related to students. Propose and manage the implementation of complex and significant programmatic change.
  • Direct policy development and the design and implementation of administrative operations, processes, systems and workforce planning to ensure maximum effectiveness, inclusivity, and equitable access for students across the university.
  • Create a dynamic, inclusive management environment for a group of diverse student affairs professionals within the AVP reporting line. 
  • Evaluate the performance of the organization and develop plans accordingly.
  • Responsible for the financial viability and success of the organization. Responsible for committing University resources with limited review by senior management.
  • Make decisions for programs that provide critical support services for the University's mission of teaching and research. Oversee allocation of all resources.
  • Serve as a leader and visible model of institutional values in development and care of students, and on student conduct and community ethics.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and at least ten years of progressively responsible leadership and supervision including administrative and financial management experience. Advanced degree, preferably a doctorate, and prior leadership experience in an academic institution strongly preferred, including experience with student care, compliance and case management. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated strategic leadership, planning and change management skills.
  • Demonstrated background and expertise in student support, compliance and case management.
  • Exceptional respect for and understanding of the needs of a highly diverse student body at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills. Advanced financial expertise in budget planning and financial forecasting.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, negotiation and political acumen skills. Ability to influence people, solve problems, trouble shoot, think creatively and resolve conflicts.
  • Expert analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Strong knowledge of industry standards, trends and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to relate to a variety of constituencies, including students, parents, faculty, community groups and alumni, and to appreciate the interests and concerns of each group.
  • Subject matter expertise for areas of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of student development theory and of concerns, challenges, interests and issues currently prevalent among undergraduate and graduate students, with a strong background in advising.
  • Proven ability to work in an inclusive and consultative way with faculty, staff, peers, students, parents, and the broader external community.
  • Demonstrated understanding and willingness to transmit the cultural and ethical values of the University as they affect students.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ WORKING CONDITIONS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sitting.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds;
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.
  • Work evenings, as needed and occasionally on weekends.
