About the position

The Department of Education and Lifelong Learning (DELL) has a vacancy for a PhD position related to the topic entrepreneurship education.  The position is temporary for a period of three years, without teaching duties. This is an educational position that shall provide promising research recruits the opportunity for professional development through studies towards a PhD. The Faculty of Social and Educational Science will be the employer. The working place will be at the Department of Education and Lifelong Learning.

The PhD position is linked to the research group Entrepreneurship in primary and secondary education and training (EPSET), and geared towards entrepreneurship education in primary or secondary education and training. The research group provides knowledge that strengthens the work on entrepreneurship education in primary and secondary education and training, and the researchers study entrepreneurship education using various methods, such as quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, theoretical and historical analyses. Research participants have been students, teachers, principals, parents, business volunteers, local, regional and national governments, and organizations like EU, OECD and JA Europe/Norway. 

The research distinguishes between three approaches to entrepreneurship education. First, education about entrepreneurship investigates entrepreneurship as a societal phenomenon. Education for entrepreneurship is about the acquisition of skills and knowledge of relevance when starting up a new enterprise. Education through entrepreneurship uses the entrepreneurial process as a method or tool to achieve a specific set of learning objectives. Entrepreneurship educations should contribute to the mix between theoretical and practical work at school. Entrepreneurship education should stimulate students learning in subjects and basic skills, developing generic competences (cooperation, initiative, creativity), and knowledge and a reflected perception of entrepreneurship.

Job description

The research fellow will work with the research project and be associated with EPSET.It is required to prepare one or more research questions and outline a description (3-5 pages) of a possible doctoral thesis. The research fellow can do qualitative studies, quantitative studies, mixed-methods, theoretical and historical studies, and the aim must be to develop new knowledge about entrepreneurship education in primary or secondary schools. High-quality survey data from several European countries (incl. Norway) with students, teachers and parents will be available. The fellow is also expected to do data collection on her own, using methods like observation, interviews, and analyses of text, documents or reflection logs. The topic must be relevant for EPSET.

Qualification requirements

The position as a fellow student has as its main objective to qualify for work in research positions. To qualify the applicant must have completed a master's degree (equivalent to 120 credits) academically based within education, adult learning an equivalent social science education, graded to a B or better, in conjunction with NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants without letter grades from previous studies should have an equally good academic basis. Applicants with weaker grades may be considered if it is documented that the candidate is particularly suitable for a PhD.

Good written and oral English language skills are required.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is three years without required duties. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Education at the Faculty of Social and Educational Science.

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
