Outstanding applicants are sought for the post of Research Associate, to be employed by the Department of Engineering at Durham University, who will carry out high-quality research to assess the potential of using biopolymer based binders to stabilise engineered slopes. The post is funded through the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Prosperous Nation Program and is led by Durham University in collaboration with the Environment Agency, Royal Haskoning and Highways England. The project as a whole aims to remove the uncertainties and knowledge gaps that currently prevent the deployment of biopolymers in the stabilisation of engineered slopes for infrastructure. Addressing this aim will involve identifying how biopolymers fill soil voids, form bonds with soil particles and how these evolve over time. These observations will then be linked to changes to mechanical and hydraulic properties.

The focus of this appointment will be to conduct a series of geotechnical laboratory testing programmes investigating the structure, mechanical strength and hydraulic properties (including soil water retention properties) of biopolymer stabilised materials. Chemical and mineralogical testing will also form part of the investigation.

Close collaboration with the other project partners will be essential in order to ensure project outputs are relevant to industry.

This post is for 12 months in the first instance
