Specialist in Implant Ethics
Department of Learning, Informatics, Management and Ethics (LIME) works within some of the key areas important to fulfilling the motto of Karolinska Institutet ´to improve human health´. We focus on research, development and education in the following areas: medical and healthcare education, informatics, management, ethics, and suicide prevention. In the research group for Healthcare Ethics, CHE research is performed on the ethical problems that arise in the professional activities of the various healthcare professions as well as the ethical issues connected with the use, development and testing of technologies and methods for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The research area also includes decisions by policy-makers on healthcare and prevention. Within its area, the unit conducts research, education, and information. Its research includes applied projects as well as more fundamental projects that aim at a deeper understanding of ethical problems connected with healthcare and biomedical research.
The specialist will be responsible for developing the unit’s research on the ethics of medical implants in the central nervous system. This research will cover the major types of such implants that are in use or in a development stage approaching clinical use. It will also cover the whole spectrum of ethical aspects, including personality changes, enhancements, informed consent, and social and cultural effects. Issues concerning patient safety and security will have a central role. The specialist will be responsible for initiating and developing clinical co-operations in the area and for ensuring that the results of this research are published internationally and also be made available to the relevant communities of clinicians.
The applicant should have a PhD in philosophy or ethics. Considerable experience from research in medical ethics, as documented in international publications, is required. Studies in implant ethics are of special interest as well as the ethical aspects of medical risk assessment. Research competence in the philosophy of medicine and/or medical applications of the philosophy of science are qualifying competences.
