Digital transition in maritime organizations – effects on business models
Digitalization creates rapid changes in the maritime industry. The introduction of new enabling technologies comes with new ways of working, and opens up for new business concepts. While there is understandably much focus on solving the technological challenges, there is less focus on the organizational ramifications of such changes.
In the called PhD project, the introduction of “power by the hour” as a new business model in maritime industry is proposed as case study.
The position reports to Head of Department.
- The objective for the PhD candidate is to understand organizational implications of current technological developments for the people performing work. As work changes, so do the roles, responsibility and statuses of the actors involved. Thus, technological challenges brings in new processes of interaction both within and among organizations. From an organizational perspective, such developments raise vital questions concerning organizational form, organizational structures, procedures, legitimization and practice of power, and patterns of interaction.
- The PhD project should look into the implications for crew, suppliers and shipowners – both respectively and relationally. How does this change the way these actors perform their work tasks? What does such technological changes do to their understanding of work, status, their definition of their own role, the relation to each other, and their sense of ownership to the problem at hand?
- The PhD research will be carried out in an interdisciplinary environment. The institute currently have several ongoing PhD projects working on related aspect of changes facing the maritime industry, such as developments within autonomy, remote ship operations, situational awareness and management challenges due to digitalization. In line with the strategy of the institute, the candidate will be expected to make use of NTNU’s simulator labs in the project.
- The current PhD project opens up for multidisciplinary backgrounds, as relevant technological or nautical competence, or a background in social science. Regardless of background, it is the organizational questions raised in this call that is the focus of the PhD work.
The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in a relevant technology-, nautical- or social-science field or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant
- Work experience from maritime/marine industry is preferred
- Good written and oral English and Norwegian language skills. English skills must be documented either by TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
- Good communication skills
- Ability to work independently as well as in team
- Potential for research at an international level
- Keen interest in the wider context of own research, and an ability to engage in cross-disciplinary teams

Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 per annum before tax. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 3 years (or 4 years including 25% teaching duties). Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to a relevant PhD programme.
As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.
Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
