About the position

A temporary position is available at the Department of Geography as Postdoctoral Fellow in the field of glaciological and hydrological modelling in mountain environments for a period of 2 years. The position as a Postdoctoral Fellow is a fixed-term position with the primary goal of qualifying for work in professional academic positions.

The selected candidate will work with Physical and Human geographers to contribute to Departmental research on effects of climate change in natural environments and in society. 

The project titled “Bracketing uncertainties in glacier melt impacts on hydrological systems in Europe and Central Asia as a means of reducing risks for society” aims to assess the responses of glacial and hydrological systems in northern and central Europe and Central Asia to the documented (past) and projected (future) climate change using high-complexity glacier and hydrological models and existing climate datasets from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP).

Job description

Some of the most dramatic impacts of global climate change occur in the cryosphere: glaciers retreat, sea ice and snow cover are reduced, and permafrost degrades. Although only a tiny fraction of land-ice cover is made up by mountain glaciers, they are critical reservoirs of fresh water in many highly populated regions on Earth such as Europe and Central Asia. In these regions, glacier-generated meltwater is a critical resource for hydropower, agriculture and the livelihood of millions of people downstream. Since the end of the Little Ice Age (1850 A.D.) a rapid retreat of glaciers has been observed in most regions on Earth, and future projections indicate the survival of only 1-20% of current ice volumes in Europe and 10-50% in central Asia by 2100 A.D.

This project aims to quantify the responses of glacial and hydrological systems to documented and anticipated future climate changes across three target regions, the European Alps, Scandinavia and Central Asia, and tease out the major climatic controls. In collaboration with international partners from the Central Asia Paleoglaciology Project , the MAGIC-DML project and the PalMod project, the Postdoctoral Fellow will set up glacier and hydrological models for selected, well-documented glacier catchments and river systems of principle importance for local communities in Scandinavia, central Europe and Central Asia.

The aim of numerical modelling experiments is to construct an envelope of probable and extreme scenarios and future trajectories for the changes in the cryosphere and hydrosphere. The candidate should also be willing to contribute to ongoing climate change research and teaching in the Department and work in close collaboration with international partners.

Qualification requirements

A postdoctoral research fellowships is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. Completion of a Norwegian doctoral degree in Physical Geography or or other relevant field or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree is required.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

Other qualifications

  • Prior experience with numerical modelling, preferably in the fields of climatology, glaciology or hydrology. 
  • Good written and oral skills in the English language and preferably in one of the Scandinavian languages.

We are looking for a passionate, dedicated and sociable person who meets the required qualifications for a postdoctoral researcher in the field of glaciological and hydrological modelling. The ideal candidate should:

  • Be able to communicate understanding of the Earth system processes
  • Have generally strong technical skills, particularly in programming and data analysis
  • Have demonstrated research independence, a solution-oriented attitude, and motivation to contribute to a good working environment at the Department

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability, as well as motivation, in terms of the qualification requirements specified in the advertisement

Salary and conditions

Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 515 200 per annum before tax. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. The period of employment is 2 years without required duties. 

Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
