Position Description

The Department of Biostatistics invites applications for a Research Associate or Research Scientist to join the lab of Professor Francesca Dominici (https://sites.sph.harvard.edu/francesca-dominici/), Professor of Biostatistics and co-Director of the Harvard Data Science Initiative.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the curation of the Medicare & Medicaid claims of the lab. Dominici’s lab has access to 15 years of Medicare claims 2000-2016, and is in the process of buying Medicare and Medicaid claims for the same years.

The successful candidate will interact with a team of Harvard faculty, PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and research scientists.

The ideal candidate is an independent, solution-oriented thinker with a strong background processing very large data sets, applying analytical rigor and statistical methods, and driving toward actionable insights and novel solutions.

Basic Qualifications

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Research Associate or Research Scientist will contribute to the effort of:

  1. Coordinating with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to manage DUAs and acquisition of new data.
  2. Processing Medicare & Medicaid claims data
  3. Training other team members in Medicare & Medicaid regulations and data analysis.
  4. Writing scientific articles and research proposals.
  5. Developing and disseminating software for reproducible research.
    1. PhD in Statistics, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Data Science, Information Technology, or other quantitative field.
    2. Excellent knowledge of SAS is fundamental, to be able to build upon SAS code that the team is already using, and to develop new code.
    3. Expertise in handling very large health claims databases.
    4. Experience with version control systems, in particular Git and GitHub.
    5. Familiarity with multiple data science tools (R, PostgreSQL), and ability to learn new tools as required.
    6. Interest in open-source software and reproducibility.

Additional Qualifications

  • Knowledge of applied statistics and computational methods.
  • Interest in Environmental Health, in particular Air Pollution Epidemiology.
