Applications are invited for a tenure-track appointment as Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering specializing in the science and technology of ‘Smart City’ (Ref.: 492441), to commence as soon as possible, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. Outstanding candidates for Professor or Associate Professor with demonstrated excellence may be considered for appointment on tenure terms.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers B.Eng., M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degree programmes. The University of Hong Kong has a highly ranked engineering school and an active Mechanical Engineering Programme. The Department employs about 30 full-time faculty members and has well-equipped teaching and research facilities and support. The research environment is vibrant. Frontier research efforts are promoted and conducted in strategic areas including, but not limited to, materials and nanotechnology, advanced manufacturing, control and robotics, thermofluids, biomedical engineering, and energy and environment. Applicant should possess a Ph.D. degree in mechanical or a related engineering field with an excellent research record. Applicants for Professor should be a world-class researcher with a high international standing, and should possess strong academic credentials, outstanding academic leadership capabilities, extensive experience in conducting externally funded research, and a distinguished record of scholarship.

The appointee is expected to conduct frontier research within the broad area of developing advanced mechanical engineering solutions to make, not just Hong Kong, but also other major cities in the world, to be a smart city. Examples of research topics may include smart mobility, smart living and smart environment. The appointee is also expected to help in teaching undergraduate as well as postgraduate courses offered by the Department.
A highly competitive remuneration package commensurate with the appointee’s qualifications and experience will be offered. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary, as well as leave and medical benefits. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
