About the position

The Department of Sociology and Political Science has a vacant temporary position as Postdoctoral Fellow in sociology/political science for a period of 2 years. The position is connected to the research of CHAIN, which is a Centre focusing on socioeconomic inequalities in health, at the Department of Sociology and Political Science, NTNU. 

The ambition of CHAIN is to conduct explanatory and intervention research, which can help reduce inequalities in health within and between countries in world regions. 

CHAIN also attempts to reduce the distance between research and practice, through collaborations with the UN sector, think-thanks, governments and NGOs.

The position as a Postdoctoral Fellow has the primary goal of qualifying for work in professional academic positions.

Job description

  • The postdoctoral position is connected to the research group CHAIN. The candidate will help coordinate CHAIN`s research activities and in particular strengthen CHAIN`s ongoing collaborations with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), The Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunisation (GAVI), International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD Study).
  • Applicants will be assessed by (1) the quality and potential of the project sketch, (2)  the quality and relevance of the academic works and (3) the potential to contribute to CHAIN.
  • The candidate is free to develop his or her research project, but it should align with CHAIN`s main ambition, which is to contribute with evidence that can help reduce the socioeconomic health gap in the world, and particularly in Low- and Middle Income Countries (LMICs).

Possible topics could be to:

  • examine socioeconomic inequalities in child mortality (using Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) or other relevant sources of data)
  • evaluate of the causal effect between socioeconomic position and mortality/disease in world regions (potentially in collaboration with GBD Study)
  • evaluate the equity impact of cancer screening services on health inequalities   (potentially in collaboration with IARC)
  • and/or to evaluate the effect of interventions on health inequalities (potentially in collaboration with UNICEF).

Qualification requirements

A postdoctoral research fellowships is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. Completion of a Norwegian doctoral degree in sociology, political science or other relevant field or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree is required.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant.

Other qualifications

  • Research experience involving publication(s) last 2 years or participation in research projects will be ascribed high importance.
  • In particular, we are looking for candidates with ongoing collaborations with GAVI, IARC, UNICEF, and/or the GBD Study, or with experience using DHS data or other cross-national data on socio-economy and health.
  • Good quantitative / statistical skills is a requirement.

Salary and conditions

Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 515 200 per annum before tax. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. The period of employment is two years without required duties. The position may be ascribed obligation to work, and extended with up to two years.The position may be ascribed obligation to work, and extended with up to two years.
