Work closely with alumni volunteers, faculty, the Office of Development and other university colleagues to support conceptualization, development, implementation, and evaluation of activities, programs, services and communications that reach, serve and engage alumni.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for External Relations, the Director of Alumni Relations is a member of the Stanford Law School Office of External Relations’ strategic leadership team. S/he is responsible for the overall planning, implementation, and management of programs and services meant to develop and enhance long-term relationships between and among the school’s alumni, students, faculty, the broader community, and the school. Key engagement and service activities under the direction of the SLS Office of Alumni Relations include global alumni chapters and regional events, student/alumni programs, alumni affinity groups, social media and online program initiatives, and several high-profile alumni events, including the law school’s annual Alumni Weekend and Board of Visitors meetings. The Director oversees a team of four direct reports who have individual program and project management responsibility within the department.
In addition to creating and delivering a wide range of programs and premier events focused on engaging alumni and friends in the life of the law school, the Office of Alumni Relations manages upwards of 1,000 volunteers annually who work to improve and build upon the connections these constituencies have with one another and with the school. The Director is responsible for managing several of the school’s highest level volunteer boards and committees, including the Stanford Law School Board of Visitors, the Global Law Chapters Advisory Committee, and other alumni committees and task forces convened as needed and aligned with key engagement initiatives for the law school.
- Lead and drive overall alumni relations strategy for Stanford Law School as part of an integrated external relations team. This includes full responsibility for the development, implementation, and assessment of programs, events, and services designed to increase alumni engagement with the school.
- Manage the Office of Alumni Relations. This includes setting individual and team goals, guiding 28 global law chapters, planning and implementing upwards of 150 alumni programs annually, and managing numerous alumni volunteer groups.
- Overall responsibility for department operations, including the recruitment, management, development, performance assessment and retention of four-person alumni relations team and seasonal contract staff.
- Develop strategies and implement outreach programs that build on the law school and university’s reputation, visibility and advocacy of its alumni, students, and thought-leaders around the world.
- Work directly with the Dean, Senior Associate Dean for External Relations, and faculty to plan, develop and implement a robust series of premier campus and regional programs leveraging the expertise and thought leadership of SLS faculty and alumni. This includes developing high-level programming for the school’s annual Alumni Weekend, annual Board of Visitors meeting, and partnering with colleagues on the management of international advisory boards in Asia and Latin America, along with other high profile alumni events as appropriate.
- Work with lead law school and university volunteers and board members. This includes managing the identification, recruitment and training of law school alumni to serve in over 30 volunteer roles annually. The Director of Alumni Relations also manages and staffs the Stanford Law School Board of Visitors, a group of approximately 70 alumni serving as advisors to the Dean and ambassadors for SLS, and oversees the deployment of this key group of volunteer leaders in support of the school.
- Provide leadership and support on issues/projects related to law school and university alumni initiatives, such as managing relationships with other SLS and university departments, programs, and centers that interact and engage alumni and volunteers to ensure a coordinated approach school- and university-wide.
- Participate in strategic and long-term planning for the Office of External Relations. This includes managing the strategic planning for the Office of Alumni Relations and reporting quarterly on the team’s progress towards goals.
- Partner with major gifts, annual giving, and stewardship teams on events, volunteer management, and faculty programs. This also includes managing the partnership with the reunions team on communication to 13 different reunion populations, class books, regional events, and programs for Alumni Weekend.
- Prepare event briefings and talking points for Dean, Senior Associate Dean, faculty, and lead volunteers for all high-profile alumni events and board meetings.
- Collaborate with campus partners. This will include actively networking with fellow professional schools, the Office of Public Affairs, and the Stanford Alumni Association to ensure that SLS is fully leveraging resources to maximize alumni engagement with the broader university and involvement in showcase events for the Stanford community. Represent SLS at monthly Alumni Relations Directors’ meeting.
- Oversee the online presence of the Office of External Relations and collaborate with the Office of Communications to expand and enhance our social media and online communication strategies for alumni programs, events, and services.
- Set and manage the Office of Alumni Relations budget.
- Foster a collaborative working environment through training and personal example; ensure team members understand expectations and opportunities for working together, across teams and departments within External Relations, and beyond.
- Assume or delegate responsibility for special projects as needed.
- Other duties may also be assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Required
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (e.g., JD or MBA) is a plus.
- Eight years of relevant experience, ideally in a university setting. A combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
- Experience in and responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating programs designed to reach, serve, and engage law school and university constituencies.
- Excellent strategic, organizational, and project management skills, and the ability to simultaneously plan and execute multiple projects.
- Experience leading cross-functional teams.
- Excellent management skills, including coaching, developing, and retaining professional staff.
- Strong track record as a relationship builder and collaborator, including the ability to build effective long-term relationships both internally and externally and the ability to articulate and advocate for institutional goals clearly.
- Strong interpersonal, team, and leadership skills; tact and flexibility in working with diverse population groups. Well-developed leadership abilities and a willingness to take risks and solve problems creatively.
- Strong ability to understand customer needs, show good judgment and diplomacy, and a high tolerance for ambiguity.
- Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience with volunteer development and oversight.
- Proven decision-making skills and the ability to understand and solve complex questions.
- A willingness to adapt to changing priorities and to working in a complex, decentralized organization.
- Must be a goal oriented and self-motivated individual who can demonstrate accountability, initiative, energy, creativity, and focus in a rapidly changing and intellectually stimulating environment.
- Enthusiasm, sense of humor, and flexibility is highly desired. Knowledge of Stanford University preferred.
- Familiarity with fundraising and/or donor relations best practices a plus.
- Computer proficiency and the ability to learn new systems.
Certificates and Licenses Required
Valid California Non-commercial Class Driver’s License.
- Occasional work on evenings and weekends.
- May work outdoors.
- Some local or domestic travel.
