Position Overview

The Academic and Engagement Coordinator will work under the direction of the Academic Head of Law by providing engagement and administrative support. The incumbent will contribute to the development of new processes and procedures in alignment with the discipline’s strategic direction, curriculum review and assist with grant processes for the discipline.

The Academic and Engagement Coordinator will coordinate and deliver events that are identified by the discipline and initiate new engagement activities and events with the support of the Academic Head of Law.

The Office of the Division of Tropical Environments and Societies provides collaborative leadership with the Colleges and ensures that the Colleges are able to deliver the core business of learning and teaching, research and engagement and contribute effectively to the strategic agenda. The Division office drives the strategic objectives of the Division and services a proportion of College administrative operations. The Colleges of the Division include:

As part of the Division of Tropical Environments and Societies, the College of Business, Law and Governance promotes, fosters, supports and administers quality teaching and research at JCU in the areas of Business, Law, Information Technology and Political Science.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Coordinate and develop new processes and procedures in alignment with the discipline’s strategic direction and curriculum review.
  2. Coordinate and regularly communicate with the academic staff on the discipline review activity and review of processes.
  3. Initiate and develop effective working relationships with discipline academic and research staff in matters relating to the development and execution of engagement activities.
  4. Coordinate and provide support to the academic staff within the discipline in preparation of individual or discipline grant applications and provide other support where required.
  5. Coordinate and deliver several key events and engagement activities that are a priority for the discipline, including Legathon; School Engagement Program, Legal Studies Conference and Community and Professional Engagement and provide feedback and reporting as directed on engagement activities. .
  6. Participate in the Divisional Engagement Group meetings to aid coordination of resources and inform engagement activity across the Division.
  7. Support the University's commitment to the principles of reconciliation, which exemplify respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the valuing of justice and equity for all Australians.
  8. Demonstrate a commitment to the University values.
  9. Support the principles of the TropEco program and engage in commitment to JCU sustainability goals and objectives.

  1. The Academic and Engagement Coordinator is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, the policies and decisions of the University Council and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
  2. The Academic and Engagement Coordinator is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations. Contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance.
  3. The Academic and Engagement Coordinator is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University, which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.

Selection Criteria

Selection and appointments will be assessed against selection criteria.

  1. Completion of a degree in business administration or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education and/or training.
  2. Demonstrated well-developed organisational and time management skills with the ability to manage own and others’ workflow and prioritise to ensure deadlines and targets are met.
  3. Demonstrated well-developed written, oral communication and interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with various stakeholders.
  4. Demonstrated ability to coordinate small events and initiate new engagement activities fora discipline or similar.
  5. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  6. Demonstrated competence and computer literacy with skills in a range of computer programs such as Microsoft Excel and Word, Power Point and Adobe.
