The Mathematical Sciences Institute (MSI), within the ANU College of Science, aims for research and educational outcomes of the highest quality.  MSI is dedicated to world-wide collaborative research, increasing the international profile and nurturing quality students. The Institute comprises approximately 45 academics and eight professional staff members and is located in a new modern sustainable building with state-of-the-art research, teaching and conference facilities. MSI coordinates an extensive visitor program, which regularly funds collaborative research and networking with researchers from other institutions in all areas of mathematics. The Institute also regularly hosts international conferences in mathematics, statistics and applications. The MSI offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate teaching programs and currently has approximately 1400 students. The Institute supports an extensive higher research degree program.

Multiple positions available with one being reserved for female candidates only as an identified position*

The MSI is strongly committed to improving the gender balance amongst staff and students. MSI is taking proactive action towards this goal by reserving one ongoing position for a female candidate.  MSI seeks to attract and hire several female mathematicians across all areas of mathematics.

Position overview

The Mathematical Sciences Institute is seeking to offer a number of continuing and/or tenure track appointments at the Academic Level B and/or Level C (which equate to the positions of Assistant/Associate Professor within the United States of America)

These positions are established for early career academics to pursue their research career in any field of mathematics, preferably in the research interests that align with one or more of the existing research programs.  MSI is particularly keen to invigorate its teaching and research programs in the areas of mathematical statistics, bioinformatics, dynamical systems, applied mathematics, number theory & cryptography.  Applications from candidates in all areas are welcome.

The level of this appointment, Academic Level B or C, is to be determined by the appointee’s current research and teaching expertise.

Applicants are expected to have an outstanding record in research and teaching relative to the level of their application. The positions involve teaching both in the candidate’s area of specialisation and standard mathematics undergraduate courses.  Successful candidates will have access to a four-year start up grant to support research, visitors and conference travel.

Joint appointments with other parts of the University are a possibility, depending on their fit with other research groups at ANU.

As mentioned above, MSI is committed to improving the gender balance amongst staff and students in the field of STEM.  As part of this initiative, the Institute is taking proactive action towards this goal by opening an ongoing academic position to female applicants only. This is an equal employment opportunity measure aiming to increase representation of women within the field of mathematical sciences and other science disciplines.
