Job Summary

The University Hospital & Cardiovascular Center (UH/CVC) Communications Specialist will be a member of both the UMHS Department of Communication (DOC) and UH/CVC Administration. This role will be embedded with UH/CVC segment leadership and serves as the point-of-contact for all internal communication activities within the adult hospitals, supporting the executive leaders. This position will execute effective employee communication and support change management initiatives across the inpatient adult clinical enterprise, based on UH/CVC segment strategic direction and priorities. This role will provide support for organizational change and developing a culture of caring, teamwork, trust and innovation.


  • The UH/CVC Segment Communications Specialist will have a dual reporting structure to the Strategic Advisor to the UH/CVC Executive Director and DOC Director of Employee and Leadership Communication

  • Both will provide the role with direction, specific feedback, ongoing mentorship

  • The position is primarily located at the Main Medical Campus (UH South) and is embedded with UH/CVC Administration approximately 80% effort.

  • This position is 100% funded by the UH/CVC Segment, Office of the Executive Director


  • The salary for this position will be based upon the selected candidates' education and experience.


  • Provide all communication support for UH/CVC executive leadership, based on strategic direction and priorities
  • Support leadership and executive positioning by determining effective ways to motivate all levels of staff using communication. Collaborate with other key stakeholders to positively impact engagement, culture, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Increase employee engagement and provide communications and operational support for internal programs like leadership rounding and employee forums that are designed to improve communication, connection, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Research, write and implement communication plans designed to impact behavior and actions of faculty and staff
  • Develop persuasive letters, stories, profiles, news and announcements for distribution to faculty and staff based on project needs.
  • Translate technical or strategic topics into easily consumed, appropriate communication tailored to various internal audiences.
  • Position and reinforce UMHS as an employer of choice through select, intentional content reflecting our workplace, work environment and working relationships with colleagues.
  • Manage vendors who provide creative support for employee-directed initiatives, including but not limited to designers and printers, freelance writers, marketing specialist, speechwriters – as needed.
  • Leverage technology and social media to optimize and increase innovative communication approaches to effectively reach all levels of staff.
  • Develop in-depth knowledge of UH/CVC and project teams within the clinical enterprise. Serve as a communication coordinator for specific special projects or departments (e.g.; DEI, HPI Engagement; etc..).
  • Work with other constituents in the Department of Communication to improve relationships across units of the UMHS. 
  • Develop, track and monitor communication measurements that are strategic, measurable, timely and realistic.

Division of responsibilities:

Content creation and implementation: 80%

Works with internal stakeholders to provide employee communication approaches to support successful implementation of value initiatives across the organization.

Collaboration with project teams and other key stakeholders on content prioritization:10%

Work closely with employee and leadership communication teams to align organizational effectiveness, value initiative and communication efforts with broader employee and leadership communication strategies and priorities.

Vendor Management: 10%

  • Manage external vendors with project management approach to successfully complete initiatives on time, in scope, and within budget while achieving excellent quality of work.

Required Qualifications*

  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in communication-related field; journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, or related field
  • Five to seven years professional experience in public relations, promotion, marketing or communication in a professional setting
  • Must be comfortable in a multi-layered organization with complex relationship and executive reporting
  • Proven experience generating client satisfaction and developing solutions in complex matrixed organizations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with solid understanding of digital media
  • Experience maintaining electronic communication vehicles, websites, blogs, social media

Desired Qualifications*

  • Direct experience in a health care and/or academic medical center
  • Experience supporting executive communication
