Grants Programme Manager (Young People and Education)
Location:     City of London
Position:    Permanent-Full time
Salary:         Competitive (plus a generous benefits package)

The Mercers’ Company is looking to recruit a Grants Programme Manager (Young People and Education) to assess the grants that we receive through the website and identify potential beneficiaries. They will also need to support the development of grant programmes which are aligned to the Company’s philanthropic strategic aims.  

Key Responsibilities 

  • Contribute to the development of the philanthropy business plan (i.e. the plan for implementing the strategy) and design of key measures of success for agreed programme areas
  • Work closely with the Philanthropy Team and Committees to develop and deliver agreed content for the programmes strategies, ensuring there is a clear alignment to the Company’s philanthropic strategic aims
  • Assess proposals for funding, including; visiting applicants, analysing the quality and potential impact of proposals and completion of due diligence in accordance with the Mercers’ Company’s guidelines  and quality frameworks
  • Prepare and present grants proposals to Committees with detailed analysis and recommendations to support effective and informed decision making
  • Manage and monitor the grants programme and contribute to effective evaluation at programme level to support continuous learning and sharing with others internally and externally as appropriate 
  • Organise events and represent the Company at relevant funder or issue based events and networks as agreed with the Head of Young People and Education.  Building a network, communicating and championing the philanthropy work of the Company
  • Contribute to the team development of systems and processes to manage flow of information, data, reporting and financial analysis
  • Support the provision of non-monetary support to grantees and/or applicants, convening round table discussions and learning events as appropriate
  • Monitor the committee budget for the of grant programme and work with the Head of Young People and Education and Finance team to support financial reporting and analysis to enable effective Committee decision making
  • To be an advocate and ambassador for the Mercers’ associated schools programme
  • Contribute to the Company’s annual report and reporting to the Philanthropy Committee, Court of Assistants and General Court, as required, in collaboration with the Head and Director of Philanthropy

The Candidate 

  • Experience of delivering a successful education grants programme in sector specific aligned with organisation philanthropic strategic strands.
  • Knowledge and experience of  grant making and/or service delivery in the charity sector (or ability to learn quickly)
  • An ability to analyse and synthesise complex information, with good analytical and writing skills 
  • Numerate with an understanding of charity finances and accounts;  and confident in assessing organisational budgets 
  • Able to deliver high quality work with real attention to detail
  • Experience of developing effective relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders 
  1. Able to form effective relationships with grantee organisations and relevant networks
  2. Able to work well with a variety of people, specifically within a membership organisation with a strong culture and values, based on family and friendship networks
  • Experience of managing projects and deliver to deadlines
  • Ability and willingness to  represent the Company in external (issue based) funder networks 
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • The ability to work flexibly and as part of a high performing team
