Professor of Chemistry
XJTLU is a unique collaborative institution, the first and currently the only university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees. Formed in 2006, the first cohort of students graduated in August 2010, and the University now has 10,000 students studying on campus. XJTLU aims to become truly research-led and has recently committed significant investment into research development in science and technology, and the expansion of PhD student numbers on campus.
The University is now seeking to appoint a Professor in Chemistry. The new Professor will be instrumental in ensuring the continued development of existing strengths across all current areas of Chemistry, and developing further internal collaborations with related disciplines, such as Engineering, Biology, and Environmental Sciences. The incoming post-holder will strengthen the Department’s broader research interests in the areas of Materials Chemistry and Sensors, Energy and Catalysis, and Biological and Medicinal Chemistry.
The University welcomes applications from candidates with cross-disciplinary expertise in areas cognizant to the Department; individuals with expertise in interdisciplinary research are particularly welcome to apply. The successful applicant will have a record of excellence in research, teaching, and learning at university-level in a relevant area of Chemistry, in addition to evidencing team-building and inter-personnel skills.
Applicants are expected to be able to teach in English; the language of instruction at the University. The successful appointee will be expected to teach, undertake research in their area of specialisation, and participate in the administration and development of XJTLU, as appropriate. The professorship will be for an initial three-year term, with the possibility of further extension.
XJTLU has two campuses: the original and well-established campus in the higher education town of Suzhou Industrial Park [SIP] and a new campus in nearby Taicang. The advertised position is based in the SIP which is a major growth zone, including operations run by nearly one-fifth of the Fortune 500 top global companies. Greater Suzhou (which includes Taicang) is now the fourth largest concentration of economic activity in China in terms of GDP, and the SIP has a higher GDP per capita than the UK. The broader Suzhou area encompasses the spirit of both old and new in China, with the historic old town’s canals, UNESCO World Heritage Site gardens, and the I.M Pei-designed Suzhou Museum attracting millions of tourists annually. SIP offers an excellent quality of life with high environmental standards.
