The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University are seeking a Social Science Research Professional 2 to provide research assistance for ongoing projects in health policy/health outcomes research, with focus on policy and outcomes in the perioperative realm. The candidate will assist faculty with preparing and analyzing large secondary datasets to analyze questions (1) relating to the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of treatment for chronic pain and (2) relating to the economics and management of patients undergoing surgery. In addition, the candidate will assist with study design and authoring the results.
- Assist in designing experiments, exercising independent initiative and judgment gained from completing a variety of high level assignments, including activities such as defining variables, formulating hypotheses, and selecting subjects, sources of information, or planned and coordinating experimental protocols. Assist in regression modelling, such as the choice of specific model and the specific variables to be obtained from claims data.
- Adapt or work out the details of new, nonstandard procedures, with the supervisor providing only general guidance and suggestions.
- Interpret, synthesize, and analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques. Use administrative health care claims data to evaluate the effectiveness of policy interventions on perioperative outcomes. Analyze and interpret large health administrative datasets using one these languages (SAS, STATA, Python, R or comparable programming languages), create risk-adjustment and outcomes variables for patients undergoing surgery.
- Solve problems, and make decisions which affect the direction of the research and result in independent contributions to the overall project. Assist in programming.
- Select and apply standard calculations and formulas independently to compile data or process documents; often serve as a resource for research methods and numerical analyses. Run regression analyses; perform power calculations.
- Co-author sections of research publications and regulatory reports as needed. Co-author the introduction and methods sections of a paper examining the effects of a given policy intervention on surgical outcomes
- Complete project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities of a limited scope as needed. Assist the investigator with grants administration.
- Supervise staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work. Supervise summer and medical students, providing guidance on research design and writing

Education & Experience (Required):
- Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field and two years applicable experience, or combination of education and experience in an applicable social science.
