Windows Solution Engineer
Reporting to the Technical Lead for DevOps and Infrastructure in Library IT, the Windows Solutions Engineer will serve as systems and database administrator, with responsibility for local and hosted Microsoft Windows databases and infrastructure, as well as for other critical services and storage in a production environment. The incumbent will design, install, configure, integrate, document, and manage core systems, storage, and applications for the Yale University Library. - Support the Library’s Microsoft SQL Server databases.
- Support the Library’s Microsoft .Net based applications.
- Advanced technical support for all Windows and .Net based Yale University Library applications.
- Provides technical expertise in multiple and complex areas of computing; provides technical expertise to assist in the area of systems and storage design and architecture; plans, develops, deploys the design of major, complex systems; provides 24/7/365 support for locally managed production-class systems.
- Provides assistance with departmental planning and long-range technical development; ensures that system design strategies meet the current and future business needs; creates, conceives, and plans the development of new data sources, and criteria, as well as systems and storage standards.
- Works closely with and supports development teams, agile and waterfall workflows, explores opportunities for continuous improvement and streamlined deployments.
- Gathers business and technical requirements, assess and analyses technical feasibility, and implements selected system or service; develops and documents best practices, processes, and procedures related to all aspects of systems and storage; creates accurate and reasonable estimates and timelines.
- Analyzes, troubleshoots, and diagnoses problems and provides ongoing maintenance and support for applications and systems.
- Investigates new products and technologies; conducts or assists in the evaluation and/or proof of concept work to make recommendations and better understand requirements and solution design.
- Maintains a deep understanding of functional and domain knowledge pertaining to related technologies and services, as well as keeps abreast of industry trends.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in a related field and a minimum of three years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Demonstrated ability with database administration and programming, particularly MS SQL Server (SSIS, SSRS). Skills crafting SQL, stored procedures, automated regular ETL routines, and user defined functions. Demonstrated ability with user administration, access controls, and data protections of MS SQL Servers.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Demonstrated ability administering and configuring various Windows server operating systems. Ability with scripting languages such as Powershell, VBScript, and .Net.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Demonstrated ability with Microsoft IIS, including site creation, migration, and access management.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Demonstrated skill with high availability, load balancing, and fail over techniques.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Familiarity with performance testing, monitoring, and tuning packages, tools, and techniques. Knowledge of authentication mechanisms such as CAS, Active Directory, LDAP, and Shibboleth. Strong analytical and organizational skills. Experience administering Microsoft Share point, including site creation, migration, and user management.
