The University Communications team has the great privilege of telling Duke’s story to the world every day. We use multiple media formats and a variety of channels to engage our audiences with the work of our faculty, administration, students, staff, and university community. We are seeking an ambitious, effective, strategic, and experienced designer/developer for our creative team. We want our work to be seen, within the university and around the world, as pushing the boundaries of great storytelling and to be ever more effective, engaging, memorable, and sharable. We are a dynamic and fast-paced team and need someone who can manage multiple projects, keep an eye on strategy while taking advantage of opportunities, and help the team stay focused, excited, and fulfilled.
A web design/developer works with a central team of creative professionals to design, development, and deploy web/multimedia content and digital design projects. This position reports to the Director of the Digital Communications and supports other office responsibilities related to the University brand, project management and strategic priorities.
The ideal candidate will be passionate about technology and design and will look for opportunities to demonstrate Duke’s brand and digital representation in new and exciting ways. As a web designer/developer, we are looking for a digital futurist and team member to take Duke’s primary online presence to new levels. This position is primarily a development and graphic design role and will also bring expertise in the digital marketing space.
40% - Develop a range of collateral within the creative team to develop a range of collateral for the Duke’s digital presence. The primary effort will be web development (Wordpress specifically) in addition to a broad use of graphic and multimedia (Adobe suite) tools for use across many channels.
30% - Create high-gloss, high-value graphics for use on a range of material. This candidate will bring a creative vision and execution that demonstrates strong use of tools and creative reach. These graphics will embody the essence of the Duke brand and contain a high caliber of quality.
10% - Be an active and engaging member of creative team providing input on emerging trends, maintaining a thorough knowledge of best practices and sharing creative ideas on ways we can further elevate the excellence of our story telling.
20% - Assist in the capture and production of campus events and brining Duke’s digital story to life through a range of media. Graphic design, web development, video capture, photography are all of the creative team. This position will have some involvement in all of the areas but will be primarily focused on design and development.
10% - Maintain a thorough knowledge of best practices specific to web development, including mobile accommodation, web accessibility and web security requirements. Keep abreast of and utilize contemporary practices, trends and technologies in design, layout and production of multiple types of media.
This candidate will have extensive experience with HTML and CSS and familiarity with developing Wordpress themes. Java script nice-to-have.
