Role Description

Cranfield University is one of Britain’s largest centres for postgraduate teaching and applied research, and is the leading British university in terms of its income from industrially and commercially funded research (circa £55m per annum). Our academic and research staff work both nationally and internationally on research and development for the benefit of some 1,500 organisations each year, seeking to enhance economic development and to achieve a better global environment.

The Research and Innovation Office (RIO) supports researchers in working together to achieve excellence and impact in delivering the University’s vision for research and innovation.  The Research Commercial function within RIO is focused on enabling the research activities of the University whilst mitigating and protecting against contractual risk.

The post will report to the Research Costing and Bids Accountant and whose primary responsibilities will be to:

  • Oversee the preparation of the technical and complete the commercial response for competitive research and related bids, highlighting special conditions to all parties;
  • Undertake calculations for all research, consultancy and large project costings, ensuring that a consistent one University approach is taken and that all calculations comply with University Financial Manual, obtain authorisation and prices as necessary to meet deadlines;
  • Coordinate expectations of academic staff, external collaborators and sponsors before final collation and submission;
  • Check project risk for each bid and ensure that this is appropriately costed into the proposal. This would include foreign exchange, overseas security, customer viability, type of work involved etc.
  • Promote appropriate bidding opportunities to academic staff, including tracking of deadlines in order to maintain the critical. Logging reasons for non-response or decline
  • Keep up to date with key sponsors terms and conditions with respect to finance to ensure University is able to maximise the financial value in future bids.

The post holder will be expected to:

  • Communicate effectively and to establish rapport and credibility with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Have strong problem-solving and deal-making skills, together with the ability to manage and prioritise a high volume and varied work-load from multiple clients to achieve required commercial deadlines and deliver in a time pressured environment
  • Have experience in using Microsoft Excel and a costing tool in a large or comparative organisation.
