The Stanford Economic Development Research Initiative (SEDRI) is a coordinated research program led by senior economists across the Stanford campus and housed at the Stanford Center on Global Poverty and Development. Its purpose is to establish a long-term data collection and research presence in several African countries, beginning with Ethiopia and Côte d’Ivoire. At each site, SEDRI will collaborate closely with local research partners.
The research program centers on building high-quality panel datasets to explore central issues in development, including: (1) health and human capital accumulation; (2) public and private provision of services; (3) adoption and diffusion of essential products, practices, and other innovations; (4) political economy and governance; and (5) organizations, entrepreneurship, and management. SEDRI will also support Stanford faculty and graduate students as they do overlay experimental studies onto the longitudinal data collection exercise.
This is a one-year fixed term position with the possibility of renewal for an additional year.

The Field Research Manager is a 100% FTE position based at Stanford (50% time) with frequent and extended travel to the SEDRI research sites (50% time). This is a one year fixed term position with the possibility of renewal for an additional year.
The position offers an opportunity to bolster prior first-hand field management experience in an organization undertaking cutting-edge development research. The Field Research Manager will directly report to and work closely with the SEDRI project PIs.
The Field Research Manager will coordinate and supervise all data collection activities. Responsibilities include: helping recruit and train field research associate(s) and/or field interns; liaising with US-based researchers on the design of survey questionnaires and identification of software and hardware for digital data collection protocols; running pilot exercises to test surveying instruments and software in the field; liaising with US-based researchers on the design of field protocols; preparing survey and field protocol manuals for survey teams; negotiating contracts with survey agencies and/or research partners; overseeing hiring, training and managing of survey teams with survey agency; maintaining regular communication between US-based researchers and survey agency/teams; overseeing the management of data – including quality verification, storage, digitization, and documentation; overseeing project costs and ensuring costs fall within projected budget; maintaining documentation of field activities; assisting with compliance with all research regulations (domestic and foreign), including IRB, permits from local authorities, etc.; assisting in writing project reports; assisting in hosting US-based academic researchers (including students) during field visits; reporting to PIs on all of the above-mentioned activities; and other tasks as assigned by the PIs.
- Assist in designing experiments, exercising independent initiative and judgment gained from completing a variety of high level assignments, including activities such as defining variables, formulating hypotheses, and selecting subjects, sources of information, or planned and coordinating experimental protocols.
- Adapt or work out the details of new, nonstandard procedures, with the supervisor providing only general guidance and suggestions.
- Interpret, synthesize, and analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques.
- Solve problems, and make decisions which affect the direction of the research and result in independent contributions to the overall project.
- Select and apply standard calculations and formulas independently to compile data or process documents; often serve as a resource for research methods and numerical analyses.
- Co-author sections of research publications and regulatory reports as needed.
- Complete project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities of a limited scope as needed.
- Supervise staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work.

Education & Experience:
Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field and two years applicable experience, or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Comprehensive understanding of scientific theory and methods.
- General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
- Strong analytical and quantitate skills and excellent judgment.
- Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
- Excellent management and organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately, a team player.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work with human study participants.
- Developing supervisory skills.
- Fluency and excellent communication skills in French (for work in Cote d’Ivoire) required
- Previous experience in development research preferred. In particular, previous experience as a field research associate is a strong plus
- Knowledge of Stata (strongly preferred) or other data analysis software is preferred
- Demonstrated ability to manage high-level relationships with partner organizations.
- Ability to work independently and in field locations.
- Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
- Occasionally stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, writing by hand, and sort/file paperwork or parts.
- Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl, rarely reach/work above shoulders, operate foot and/or hand controls.
- Overseas travel is required.
