This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious graduate with the ability and confidence to manage a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project with Creation 360 Ltd.

The University of Manchester and Creation 360 Ltd are looking to recruit a Software Engineer to work in parallel with a Data Scientist (KTP Associate) to undertake this 36-month project. The project’s overall aim is to design and embed a technical innovation management capability to capture track and implement technical innovation driven directly by clients’ needs and internal improvement areas.

While data science and software engineering share many similar traits, they have arisen from different roots, and so each has different perspectives on methodology and best practice. Software engineering encompasses the full lifecycle of a software system, and so is concerned with how it fits together, the correctness and usability of each part of a system, and how systems should be developed and maintained over time. Data science, in contrast, has most commonly been concerned with exploration, analysis and visualization of data, and the explanations behind any trends or correlations that may be contained within. Manchester is recognised as leaders in trying to join these processes, through our Research Software and Data Engineering Team, who are part of the project supervisory team.

The position will provide the successful candidate with a unique opportunity to determine how to synergistically embed the two in a new and rapidly growing enterprise. We will apply agile techniques in both work plans, to learn how to optimise the effective, responsive deployment of data science in software, providing knowledge that will have immediate gains for the company.

Candidates will require a recently-obtained minimum of a 2:1 degree in Computer Science or related discipline plus a Masters in a related subject area. PhD graduates in data science and related areas with interest in real-world application of their skillsets in a commercial context are encouraged to apply. Experience of commercial development is desirable.

This post is funded through a KTP award, a UK Government scheme intended to promote sustained and mutually beneficial relationships between universities and industry.

Based at Creation 360 Ltd (located in Stretford, Manchester) the successful candidate will work directly with supervisors from both the University and Creation 360 Ltd and will utilise the facilities and resources of both organisations.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
