Role Description

We are looking for an individual who would like to develop and build a career within Mechanical Engineering.

Cranfield Impact Centre (CIC) is a testing laboratory with over 30 years’ experience of testing structures across a variety of industries. We have been at the forefront in formulating legislation for Formula 1 and Coach Industries.

Our unique facilities include a sled track, static test bed and a range of drop towers to perform a comprehensive range of tests. Structures that we regularly test include Formula 1 nose cones, aircraft seats and packaging, for our high profile, clients.

The primary role is to successfully complete an apprenticeship development programme leading to an Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3. This will involve attending day release at Bedford College.

Once the apprenticeship has been successfully completed, you will support the mechanical testing activities of the current team. This will involve supporting technicians in the preparation of tests by constructing jigs and building assemblies. During testing days for outside clients the apprentice will be involved in preparing of test fixtures and post-test dismantling. You will also perform general workshop tasks such as drilling, cutting and machining of metallic and composite structures.

You must have 3 GCSE’s at Grade A-C or 9-4, including Maths, English, Science (or equivalent) and be IT literate. No essential experience is needed as this is an apprentice role however you should be able and willing to follow instructions and learn new skills.  You should be able to demonstrate appropriate interpersonal skills, good grammar, spelling, accuracy and attention to detail, and the ability to plan and organise to meet deadlines,

It would be advantageous if you already have experience of mechanical workshops techniques, use of hand tools and are able to demonstrate that you are practically minded to solve solutions.

For an informal discussion please contact Dr Jim Watson, Cranfield Impact Centre Manager, on (T); +44 (0)1234 754149.
