Position Description

The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations seeks to appoint a tenured full professor in Sephardi Studies. This specialization is defined broadly to encompass not only Iberian Jewry, pre- and post-Expulsion, but also Jews in the Islamic world more generally as well as in the Ottoman Empire and in Western Europe in the medieval, early modern, and modern periods. The appointment is expected to begin on or after July 1, 2020.

The successful candidate will be able to teach and supervise students in the Jewish history and culture of the medieval and/or modern Mediterranean world, and will have research expertise in some particular aspect or aspects of Sephardic history and culture. Examples include, but are not limited to, Jewish literature, philosophy, or halakhah; visual and material culture; Jewish-Muslim relations; Jewish-Christian relations; the world of the conversos; a particular Sephardic diaspora, etc. Candidates must have mastery of Hebrew along with other pertinent languages such as Arabic, Judaeo-Arabic, Latin, Spanish, Portuguese, Ladino, and/or Ottoman Turkish. The appointee will teach and advise at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and it is hoped that s/he will participate actively in other departments and programs in the university.

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in Jewish studies or related discipline is required; fluency in Hebrew.

Additional Qualifications

Demonstrated strong commitment to teaching and research is desired. Candidates should also evince intellectual leadership and impact on the field and potential for significant contributions to the department, University, and wider scholarly community.
