Located in Edmonton, the University of Alberta (U of A) is one of Canada’s top teaching and research-intensive universities, with an international reputation for excellence. The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research plays a crucial role in the University. With responsibility for the leadership and administration of U of A’s graduate programs, the Faculty oversees admissions, registration, student programs, and supervisory examining committees. It also determines the University’s requirements and standards for graduate admissions, and administers a number of prestigious graduate scholarship programs. 

A member of Deans’ Council and a senior academic administrator of the University, the Vice-Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies and Research is responsible to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) for all operations of the Faculty, including budget and fund development. The Vice-Provost and Dean manages a large staff and provides innovative leadership in building a broad vision for graduate studies and research. They work for the success of graduate students across the University through providing leadership on many initiatives to enhance the graduate student experience, through the administration of graduate academic, research, and scholarship programs, and through the facilitation of inter-Faculty collaboration. The Vice-Provost and Dean also builds and maintains strong partnerships with external stakeholders, including governments, funding agencies, and other universities.

Candidates will have a doctorate and an outstanding record of scholarship and senior administrative leadership.  The successful candidate will be appointed to a continuing position at the rank of Full Professor. They must bring a deep commitment to, and support of, excellence in research, graduate student development and supervision, scholarly integrity, and teaching. They will be interested in, and excited about, the broad range of disciplines and scholarly approaches to be found within a research-intensive university. Finally, the Vice-Provost and Dean must be highly collegial and collaborative, have superb communications skills, bring excellent networks (nationally and internationally), and have a strong orientation to relationship building, both inside the university and externally.

This position is in accordance with University terms and conditions, and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and will be competitive with public research-intensive post-secondary institutions. Components of compensation will include base salary, a comprehensive benefits package (which can be viewed at, and additional negotiated benefits applicable to the position.
