Sessional Lecturer in Media and Communication
NYU Sydney is seeking a lecturer to teach the subject 'Media and the Environment' to undergraduate students during the NYU semester from February 4 - May 17, 2019. The semester is 15 weeks long including a one-week break from March 18-22 and exams take place May 20-22.
Class meets once a week on Mondays 9am-12pm at our academic centre in The Rocks.
The appointed person will take responsibility for the coordination of the course including preparing the weekly classes as well as setting assignments and grading. Lecturers are paid at competitive casual academic rates aligned with local enterprise agreements. In addition to their teaching duties, they will be paid to attend an induction meeting during the orientation week prior and for periodic meetings and training.
This class will investigate the dominant critical perspectives that have contributed to the development of Environmental Communication as a field of study. The class explores the premise that the way we communicate powerfully impacts our perceptions of the 'natural' world, and that these perceptions shape the way we define our relationship to and within nature, as well as how we define and solve environmental problems. The goal of this class is to access various conceptual frameworks for addressing questions about the relationship between the environment, culture and communication. Students will explore topics such as consumerism, representations of the environment in popular culture and environmental activism.
