The Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC)
The Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC), part of the University of Queensland’s Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI), is seeking a Director who can lead the development of new research programs that directly address the key safety and health challenges facing the sector. The Centre established in 1998, is globally recognised for its work on improving safety and health outcomes for mining workforces and communities.
One of the UQ’s eight research institutes, the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) consists of some 200 staff and postgraduate students covering the areas of mining and geology, mineral processing, environment and rehabilitation, social responsibility, safety and risk, and water. SMI is industry-focused and consequently works with many leading global resources companies and many small-medium enterprises and suppliers. SMI interacts strongly with governments and community. A priority for SMI is the development of talent and providing an environment for successful and rewarding careers.

The Centre Director, MISHC will be motivated by a desire to contribute to significant and ongoing improvement in minerals industry safety and health performance.
The Centre Director will work closely with senior industry leaders, government representatives, other institutions, and SMI staff to put in place the partnerships and collaborations that will be essential to achieve fundamental change.
A deep understanding of minerals sector safety and health; a recognition of the important role that can be played by relevant, targeted research; and strong communications and leadership skills are required.
The successful appointee will have a demonstrated capacity to engage at senior levels within industry on safety and health priorities; identify opportunities for minerals sector safety and health research; conceptualise potential research responses to industry issues; and build research partnerships with industry.

This role is a full-time position; however flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.

This is a full-time, fixed term three year appointment at Research Academic level E, renewable by negotiation. A competitive remuneration, support package and, as appropriate, flexible work arrangements will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
