The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is a government-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong.  It offers programmes at various levels including Doctorate, Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees.  It has a full-time academic staff strength of around 1,400.  The total annual consolidated expenditure budget of the University is in excess of HK$7.5 billion. 


Head, Research Office (Ref. 18101905-IE)

The University is looking for a dynamic and highly competent professional to lead the Research Office. 

The Research Office (RO) is responsible for the administration and support of research programmes as well as contracts and grants matters including dissemination of funding opportunities, contracts and grants administration, internal funding support, proposal development assistance and vetting submission, organization of research workshops as well as support of research units and committees of research matters. 

Job Functions

Reporting to Vice President (Research Development), the appointee will assume the Headship of the RO and be responsible for:

(a)    supporting Senior Management in formulating and implementing polices, rules, regulations and strategic initiatives on research, contracts and grants matters;
(b)    overseeing research administration and support of research units as well as contracts and grants matters;
(c)    fostering and maintaining effective communication and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders for enhancement of research activities in the University;
(d)    enhancing the University’s coordination and collaboration with research funding agencies in the Chinese mainland and some other regions;
(e)    providing support to various University committees, including the Research Committee and the Areas of Excellence Committee; and
(f)    performing any other relevant duties as assigned by the Senior Management of the University.

Applicants should:

(a)    have a recognised university degree or a relevant professional or postgraduate qualification;
(b)    have no less than eight years of relevant experience at senior managerial level, with experience in administrating grants and contracts including those in the Chinese mainland would be an advantage;
(c)    have substantial achievements in teaching and research, preferably with good knowledge of the higher education environment in Hong Kong, Mainland China and some other regions;
(d)    have excellent analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced and multi-cultural environment; 
(e)    be innovative and energetic, demonstrate strong commitment to drive and ensure achievement of objectives;
(f)    have proven leadership with ability to inspire, motivate, and develop a team of staff to strive for excellence;
(g)    be able to formulate and implement plans and strategies independently; and
(h)    have excellent communications and presentation skills, with high proficiency in written and spoken English and Chinese, preferably fluency in Putonghua as well.

Remuneration and Conditions of Service

A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered.  Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract.  Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.  Applicants should state their current and expected salary in the application.
