The successful candidate will represent the University of Michigan Medical School in providing ombuds services to research track faculty and facilitate the resolution of faculty problems and complaints with respect to policy administration or conflict resolution. The individual will hold a 5% academic administrative position and will report to the Sr. Associate Dean for Faculty and Faculty Development.
- Serves as ombuds for research track faculty (as defined by Regents’ Bylaw 501.1) in the medical school in the capacity of information specialist and advisor.
- Meet with research track faculty members to assist in determining the nature of complaints or problems, to advise on policy and to explore appropriate avenues for redress, based on the nature of involved issues.
- Develop and maintain a network of University resources available to assist in achievement of conflict resolution responsibilities.
- Where appropriate, work with faculty members and administrators to mediate and facilitate the resolution of issues.
- Refer problems, as appropriate, to other University offices or external organizations.
- Make recommendations regarding equitable problem resolutions and monitor the implementation of resolutions.
- Maintain confidentiality within the constraints of Michigan law.
- Maintain liaison with local ombuds in University units and at other Universities.
- Serve as a protagonist for fairness and equity of system and institutional level policies, processes, and procedures.
- Promote a proactive, visible faculty ombuds system.
- General direction is received from the Executive Vice Dean for Academic Affairs.
- Current appointment as Professor on the research track is necessary, or Professor on the instructional track who was previously on the research track.
- Considerable knowledge in policy administration, counseling, or advising is desirable, preferable beyond a single unit.
- Considerable knowledge of the University policies, rules, procedures, organization and governance is necessary.
- Demonstrated excellence in communication.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to faculty-related issues and concerns, and ability to serve in a conciliatory role with faculty and administration.
