Job Summary

The Case Manager for Student Sexual & Gender-Based Misconduct & Other Forms of Interpersonal Violence Processes provides direct process management, administrative organization and facilitation for case work under “The University of Michigan Policy and procedures on Student Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct and Other Forms of Interpersonal Violence”, including effective process communication and documentation, coordination of live hearings, sanction delivery and compliance, alternative resolution facilitation as well as review and reintegration procedures. In keeping with our “generalist” (cross-training) model, this position may, at times, also manage case work under the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities, including the facilitation of Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) cases, Adaptable Conflict Resolution (ACR) cases, and Formal Conflict Resolution (FCR) case work.

Responsibilities*

Sexual Misconduct Case Management & Facilitation Responsibilities: 70%

  • Coordinates and independently manages complex process and procedures, monitors for timely due process & completion of assigned sanctions/educational measures.
  • Ensures effective cross-communication/coordination across multiple University stakeholders.
  • Develop and evaluate, in concert with University stakeholders, educational sanctions/interventions rooted in restorative justice and social justice philosophies that accomplish University’s Title IX obligations.
  • Provides direct services to Claimants and Respondents requiring additional information about policy or process; including providing timely effective referral for additional support through partner units (e.g. Dean of Students, CAPS, UMPD, etc.)
  • Provides effective evaluation, analysis and synthesis of complex case facts and relevant information utilized in the sanctioning process.
  • Provides efficient and effective case tracking through utilizing Advocate database systems, excel tracking documents, etc.; to include, recommending solutions for continual process improvement.
  • Produce and maintain appropriate case files and documentation through case notes, forms, templates, statements, and reports related to ongoing sexual misconduct case work.
  • Utilize effective communication techniques to guide and support students, staff, faculty and parents as necessary in navigating Sexual misconduct policies, procedures and resources.
  • Effectively engages in case audit procedures to ensure accurate case work and documentation, to include recommending action and follow-up to ensure an equitable and just process for all students.
  • Manages the coordination of the appeal process required to facilitate timely review and resolution with the External Reviewer and Vice President for Student Life..
  • Manages highly sensitive and confidential information with discretion and good judgment to maintain confidentiality in compliance with all applicable laws (i.e. Title IX, VAWA, FERPA, etc.).
  • Maintain and advance individual and collective knowledge and awareness of federal and state guidance and regulations relevant to student affairs case management, such as Clery, and Title IX.
  • Deliver, when assigned to Respondents, relevant educational sanctions/interventions.
  • Coordinate live hearings/arbitrations

General Case Management & Advancing Educational and Restorative Approaches: 15%

  • Recommend, develop, and implement policies, procedures, program(s) and service(s) that allow students to develop knowledge of self and others (particularly with regard to developing lifelong ethical, relational, and conflict resolution-related skills), navigate their educational environment to achieve their desired outcomes, and evaluate the role they wish to play as contributing members of society in a multicultural world.
  • Work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to assess current issues and concerns within the University community and develop interventions, programs, workshops, and seminars to address them.
  • Utilize relevant theory, literature, research, and best practices and approaches in the areas of civic engagement, identity development, leadership learning, community building, social justice, and restorative justice to facilitate conflict resolution across a spectrum of resolution pathways.
  • Utilizes the spectrum model of conflict resolution pathways to meet individual, group and community needs as they arise.
  • Educate students regarding the full measure of rights and responsibilities they have as members of the University of Michigan community.
  • Coordinates planning and execution of annual training events, including yearly staff training, weekly in-service, and the annual Arbiter (formal conflict resolution) training.
  • Manage and facilitate case work under all OSCR resolution pathways (ACR for AOD, ACR, and FCR) as part of the unit cross-training “generalist” model.
  • Contribute to and provide leadership for the daily administrative functions of the Office of Student Conflict Resolution.

Key Administrative Responsibilities: 15%

  • Comply with and educate others on regulations and laws related to the work of OSCR, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Clery Act, and regulations under VAWA.
  • Recommends and develops process and procedural enhancement and documentation for OSCR processes under the Student Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct Policy as well as the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Provides additional management capacity and leadership for responding to Sexual Misconduct/Title IX related background check requests received by the Office of Student Conflict Resolution.
  • Co-manage content and content creation for the website for the University of Michigan Policy and Procedures on Student Sexual and Gender Based Misconduct and Other Forms for Interpersonal Violence.
  • Implements a communications and outreach plan that will build awareness of OSCR and its programs to illustrate the value added to the student experience.
  • Recommends data driven organizational changes while assisting in the development of a comprehensive annual report for OSCR services.
  • Educate the campus community of OSCR’s role in University of Michigan Policy and Procedures on Student Sexual and Gender Based Misconduct and Other Forms for Interpersonal Violence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the Office of Student Conflict Resolution.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution.
  • 2 - 3 years experience in applicable areas of responsibility including, but not limited to: Student development, ethical development, social identity development, leadership development, community building, social justice, restorative justice, conflict resolution theory, motivational interviewing, and related theories of human motivation, change, and development.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel, Social Work, or another relatable field or 5-7 years of directly relevant experience.
  • 2-3 of professional experience in a university setting.
  • Previous experience in conflict resolution, alternative resolution, restorative justice practices, and Title IX case management.
  • Previous training in the field of student conduct (i.e., Gehring Institute, ASCA Title IX Institute, NCHERM Training, etc.).
  • Previous experience utilizing the Advocate student conduct database system.
