A research specialist position is available as a joint position in the Lopez and Vaughan labs. Our laboratories study host-virus interactions / innate immunity and lung progenitor cell biology, respectively. This position is specifically funded by a pilot grant designed to identify innate antiviral restriction factors for influenza using ‘organoids’, three-dimensional aggregates of primary lung epithelial cells. Organoids will be generated from so-called Collaborative Cross mice, a sequenced panel of inbred mouse strains allowing for mapping of resistance or susceptibility genes. This position will be largely self-contained after appropriate training and will involve murine tissue disaggregation, flow cytometry, organoid cell culture, and viral infection ex vivo. Note that influenza strains are mouse adapted and not capable of human infection. The specialist will also perform detailed quantitative analysis on these organoids before and after infection including qPCR, immunofluorescence imaging, and measurement of standard features like organoid size and number.
Position length is 1 year with extension contingent upon funding.

A Bachelor’s Degree and 0 to 1 year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
