Course Description

Honors 230: Histories of Human Experimentation

Experimenting on human beings has always raised a set of complex social, ethical, and political questions. Some of those issues have persisted over the centuries; some have been specific to a given time and place. Much of contemporary medical practice is based on knowledge created by experiments done on human beings. In this class we will examine histories of human experimentation. We will ask how people at different times and in different places answered questions about whether it was acceptable to use human beings as research subjects. We will examine which human beings were the subjects of the experiments, and what limits were placed on the conduct of the experiments. Reading assignments will include both primary source material and some of the latest scholarship on the subject. No prior background in medicine is necessary. All medical knowledge necessary to understand the case studies will be presented in class.


The GSI will lead two discussion sections of the larger course, and will work closely with the course's faculty instructor to achieve the teaching and learning outcomes of the course.As part of the Honors Core Curriculum, this course introduces first- and second- Honors students to the fields, questions and meta-questions, and methodologies of the Social Sciences. This course is a discussion section of a large lecture course; the lead instructor of the course will provide regular guidance; GSIs will collaborate with him and other GSIs in the course, and instructors and GSIs from other Honors Core Courses. GSIs in the Honors Core are expected to participate in occasional events for Core courses.

Required Qualifications*

Good standing in a Ph.D. program in a relevant department.

Desired Qualifications*

Candidacy in a Ph.D. program in a relevant department; experience teaching social science courses at UM or other college or university.
