General Summary/Purpose

Assist with the growth and the future development of the Physics department.  Change agent, professional leader and strategic partner.  Develop new administrative policies and procedures as needed to ensure smooth operation of the Division. Make recommendations to Chief Medical Physicist and Director in the form of decision options. Provide divisional information as requested by Department, School, Hospital, or other external entities as requested and appropriate.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities


duties will include managing the budget for this service ensuring that allocated funds are being spent appropriately.  The manager will also be responsible for the management of supplies, space and maintenance of all aspects of this service. 


duties will include management of all physics staff, which includes Sr. Medical Physicists, Medical Physicist, and Assistant Therapeutic Clinical Physicists.  On a regular and continuous basis, exercise administrative judgment and assume responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the functional area. Oversee and maintain compliance of the web-based time and attendance system.  Participate in the annual review process for staff. 


duties include the provision of service in all aspects of the current physics practice in the department.  These include conformal radiotherapy, IMRT, VMAT, IGRT based on kV CBCT and MV-CT, stereotactic radiosurgery/radiotherapy, motion management and brachytherapy.  The external beam equipments in the department include 4 medical accelerators, one Tomotherapy unit, and one Cyberknife system.  Philips Pinnacle is employed for planning treatment on the conventional accelerators.  The brachytherapy practice supports treatment with HDR, LDR, and intra-operative approaches.  The imaging equipments include two CT (one multi-slice) scanners, and a short bore MRI system.


duties include the teaching and supervision of students, fellows, physics residents and clinical residents in our training and research programs.  The candidate is also expected to participate in developmental projects to support the programmatic goals of the department.  These include uncertainty analysis and informatics development to improve operational safety, treatment quality and workflow; motion management with 4D MRI; inter- and intra-fraction treatment verification. 

Minimum Qualifications

Masters or Ph.D. degree in Physics or in an equivalent field and has completed a 3 year Medical Physics Residency program. Certification by the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiological Physics is desirable. 

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

At a minimum, board-eligible candidate is expected to attain certification within three years. Demonstrated ability to provide a high standard of medical radiation therapy physics services. Once certification is obtained you are expected to meet the requirements of Maintenance of Certification (MOC) per the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiological Physics by continue learning and improving your skills, which will be evaluated on a rolling three-year “look-back” window.  One of the requirements to maintain certification is successful completion of the cognitive examination.  Facility with computers and/or electronics is desirable. Demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, analytical, oral and written communication and teaching skills.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
