The School of Mechanical and Design Engineering at the University of Portsmouth invites applications for Professors of Mechanical Engineering to strengthen its research and leadership capability in relevant fields of interest.  The successful candidates will have outstanding research records that are internationally recognised, bringing their own unique experience and relationships to the School.  They will be expected to pursue research of the highest standards and attract external funding to support the School’s research and innovation activities, contributing towards our aspirational REF objectives.

At a particularly exciting time for the School, we seek exceptional academics to provide strategic leadership across the disciplines of mechanical engineering, but particularly welcome applications in the areas of engineering design and advanced manufacturing.  The intention is to extend existing areas of expertise, and to provide leadership and research support for research staff and students. Our professors are also expected to provide inspirational academic leadership in teaching and curriculum development within the School of Mechanical and Design Engineering.

The successful post-holders will have the opportunity to work with colleagues in excellent laboratories, including Mechanical Behaviour of Materials, Advanced Polymer and Composites and Structural Mechanics.  One or both of the post holders will lead and drive our ambitious plan to develop research and enterprise initiatives in the newly established Future Technology Centre, which houses some of the most modern facilities for advanced manufacturing and characterisation of materials.

The University values a diverse workforce and welcomes applications from all sections of the community, particularly under-represented groups in engineering. The University of Portsmouth holds Athena SWAN bronze award, in recognition of our commitment to promoting gender equality and creating a better working environment for men and women.
