Job Summary

Working under the supervision of the Stamps School Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Facilities Manager ensures that all school facilities, both on and off campus, are maintained at the highest levels and meet all life and safety standards; oversees space renovations and related initiatives; coordinates relevant access control processes; and advises leadership on best practices, policy compliance, and related issues.  Stamps School facilities currently include the Art & Architecture Building (shared with the Taubman College), the Faculty/Graduate Student Studios, the Stamps Gallery (downtown Ann Arbor), and the Brightmoor Maker Space (Detroit).

Salary Range 

$65,000 – $70,000, with a 100% appointment

Facilities Maintenance [60%]

  • Coordinate all aspects of facilities maintenance including repairs and custodial and grounds activities, in collaboration with university staff, Stamps School studio coordinators, and school leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with U-M policies and procedures, including safety programs and ADA requirements, in collaboration with OSEH, Plant Operations, and other university departments.
  • Manage facilities maintenance budgets, in collaboration with the CAO.
  • Process and monitor all plant, telecom and related maintenance and service requests; work collaboratively with the CAO, custodial supervisor, plant operations and others, providing feedback as necessary.
  • Respond to inquiries and complaints and resolve problems.
  • Assist in maintaining energy efficiency in facilities and associated operations, in cooperation with the university energy management team.
  • Initiate programs for continuous improvement in facilities management and quality of service delivered as well as cost effective utilization of resources.
  • Monitor the scheduling and utilization of HVAC, lighting and other systems.
  • Schedule and coordinate property disposition activities.
  • Serve as a liaison to Plant Operations, off-site building management, and relevant university units.
  • Supervise temporary employees, with responsibility for hiring, training, work assignment, and discipline.
  • Restock first aid kits in studios; acquire first aid CPR training to respond to medical emergencies at the school.
  • Acquire scissor lift/fork lift training and certification as necessary to train other staff in operating these devices.

Renovation and Remodeling [20%]

  • Plan, implement and manage all details of remodeling and renovation projects, equipment purchases & delivery - including budget oversight, in collaboration with the CAO.
  • Coordinate and track service, equipment, and furniture/interior design orders.

Space Utilization and Access Control [10%]

  • Manage and coordinate keycard and key access for school facilities, in collaboration with school leadership, the U-M Key Office and other departments.
  • Provide data and recommendations on space use allocations and coordinate space relocations; assist with space analysis initiatives, and maintain space and equipment inventories.
  • Complete the annual space survey, working collaboratively with associate deans and other school leadership to ensure spaces are correctly categorized and usage accurately represented.
  • Coordinate assignment of lockers and conduct annual cleanout.
  • Schedule use of the Stamps School bus, including supervision of temporary drivers and coordination of ongoing maintenance and repairs; ensure compliance with relevant school and university policies and procedures.

Administration [10%]

  • Prepare and/or coordinate the preparation of periodic and special reports on unit operations, facilities costs and related topics.
  • Coordinate Stamps School building deliveries to the Art & Architecture Building.
  • Chair the Stamps School’s Lab/Studio Safety Committee and serve as the Stamps School's representative to the campus Lab/Studio Safety Committee.
  • Serve as a member of the school’s senior staff and space planning teams.
  • Assists with related school events, activities, and initiatives as requested.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a related field. Course work in art or design disciplines a plus.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in managing facilities, personnel, materials and equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in identifying and resolving problems, including developing and recommending strategies for solutions and seeking direction and input from leadership and stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and manage projects from inception to completion, including the ability to build consensus among stakeholders and balance competing priorities.
  • Strong communications and customer-service skills, including experience working with a diverse constituency of administrators, faculty, staff, students, vendors, and the university community.
  • Previous experience working within a large, complex organization, preferably within a higher education institution.
  • Computer and database proficiency, with experience using Word, Excel, the Google suite of tools, and databases (Filemaker Pro preferred). Macintosh experience preferred.
  • Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends and to respond to emergencies after hours.
  • Ability to travel between site locations within Ann Arbor and on occasion to and from Detroit.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in art, design architecture or other related field.
  • Knowledge of equipment, tools and space needs within an art/design educational facility.
  • Familiarity with University of Michigan policies and procedures related to facilities management.
  • Previous experience in using an enterprise-wide space management system.
