Assistant Professor in Astronomy & Space Science Instrumentation

The role

The Department of Physics at Durham University seeks to appoint a talented individual to the role of Assistant Professor in Astronomy & Space Science Instrumentation. The successful candidate will be a member of the Centre for Advanced Instrumentation (CfAI). CfAI develops state-of-the-art instruments for application across a wide range of disciplines including astronomical instrumentation, biophysics, remote sensing, gamma-ray astronomy and fusion diagnostics. Current activities of the group in astronomy & space science involve a number of international partners and includes instruments for both ground-based and space-based platforms. The successful applicant will have research experience that complements and strengthens the existing areas of research within CfAI and a strong potential to develop and lead new projects in astronomy & space science. The successful applicant is expected to publish world-class research with a focus on quality in high impact journals and have the potential to engage with industrial partners. They will also contribute to the development and delivery of high-quality research-led teaching that produces a world-class learning environment which enables undergraduate and postgraduate students to achieve their potential. The position will start around October 2019.

Durham University hosts one of Europe's largest and most active research groups working in the fields of space science and instrumentation. Currently we have 25 permanent members of staff, 3 long-term research fellows, and around 100 postdocs, students, and support staff. Our instrumentation research is undertaken in CfAI, while theoretical activities are focused in the Institute for Computational Cosmology (ICC), and our observational work is carried out in the Centre for Extragalactic Astronomy (CEA). Our group benefits significantly from the deep-rooted synergies between the research programmes in the CfAI, CEA and ICC. In November 2016 CfAI moved into a new building, the Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics, along with the ICC and CEA. CfAI also has dedicated instrumentation laboratories for integration and test located at the NETPark technology park about 7 miles from Durham. Candidates should have a PhD in Physics or a related subject and an established record of research at the highest international level. They should have also demonstrated potential for teaching and postgraduate student supervision.
