Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Chief of Campus Security and the immediate supervision of the Operations and/or Patrol Lieutenant, the Campus Security Sergeant plans, supervises, assigns, reviews, and participates in the work of Campus Security staff involved  patrol, investigations, crime  prevention, community relations, traffic investigations, and  related services and activities; oversees and  participates in all work activities; coordinates activities with other agencies; and  performs a variety of administrative and technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility

Job Duties

  • Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of Campus Security personnel involved in patrol, preliminary investigations, crime prevention, community relations, and other related duties and activities
  • Supervise Campus Security officers assigned to dispatcher duties
  • Supervise and participate in the work of Campus Security Officers who are assigned specialized assignments and duties
  • Guide, assist, and instruct officers in the performance of their duties
  • Prepare and administer briefings, and deploy personnel to site assignments in accordance with the needs of the Department
  • Coordinate and supevise Campus Security perosnnel participation in training releated to campus security work and professional development
  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff
  • Train, counsel, and discipline personnel according to established policies and procedures
  • Supervise and participates in community oriented policing strategies, traffic incident and criminal investigations
  • Receive and review all crime and incident reports; Ensure such reports are properly written and submitted
  • Prepare activity reports, incident reports, and other documentation as required
  • Operates Institute owned vehicles
  • Establish standards, monitor performance, prepare and conduct performance evaluations, monitor remedial actions and employee development goals
  • Recommend and assist with the goals and objectives of the Department
  • Create duty schedules and methods for providing effective services
  • Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to interdepartmental relations and mutual aid support
  • Review and maintain department policies, regulations and operational procedures
  • Ensures that officers understand and perform in compliance with established policies, regulations, and procedures
  • Supervise training of new officers on departmental policies, procedures and activities
  • Conduct frequent and recurring inspections of patrol perosnnel and equipment
  • Supervise and participate in the preparation of reports for various cases including cases going to judicial review
  • Prepare supplemental reports as required
  • Appear in court/conduct hearings to present evidence and testimony as required
  • Provide leadership consistent with the mission statement and core values of the Department
  • Understand the uniqueness of campus security in a higher education environment, and is sensitive to the needs of students, faculty, and staff
  • Perform high visibility vehicle, bicycle and foot patrols on campus, at Caltech properties, and at student and/or faculty houses to discourage and apprehend lawbreakers, and to deter crime

Basic Qualifications

  • 5 or more years of Higher Education campus security experience
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Driver's license
  • Possess and maintain a valid BSIS Guard Card (license)
  • Jeanne Clery Act certification
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification

Physical requirements:

  • Standing at times for prolonged periods, walking, reaching, climbing, lifting 50 lbs. or more, carrying, writing, pushing, pulling, hearing, squatting/kneeling, driving, speaking, seeing, and restraining suspects
  • Walk Campus properties
  • May be exposed to noise, chemicals, heat/cold, carcinogens, fumes/gases, dirt, and human tissue/fluids, extreme weather and temperatures
  • Irregular work schedule, multiple concurrent tasks, frequent interruptions, detailed work, frequent deadlines, periods of concentrated attention, and frequent contact and interaction with people

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Two years as a Corporal/Lead at Caltech
  •  832 PC Certification, or its equivalent
  • Successful completion of college level criminal justice coursework
  • Basic POST Certificate
  • AA/AS Degree in Criminal Justice or Organizational Leadership
  • Prior sworn law enforcement experience
  • Relevant and contemporary Police or Military leadership certification (NUCPS, FLETC, POST)
