The Division of Pediatric Nephrology is seeking a Research Program Coordinator for a fulltime position. Some flexibility is required to meet patient needs.

This candidate would be responsible for coordinating multiple research studies that involve children, adolescents and young adults. In addition, the candidate would be responsible for managing a monthly multidisciplinary pediatric Obesity Hypertension clinic and for performing some cardiovascular measurements on clinic patients and research participants. 

There will be frequent contact with patients and families, so an ability to work with a diverse patient population is essential! The Research Program Coordinator must be organized and should be capable of balancing multiple tasks at once, acting independently, and performing proactively.

The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with the Division of Nephrology’s Senior Research Program Coordinator, as well as faculty/principal investigators, fellows, and staff in the Division. Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Screening, recruitment and enrollment of study participants in a clinical setting
  • Preparing IRB applications including changes in research and continuing reviews
  • Developing and updating study Manual of Procedures
  • Facilitating study visits and ensuring that study procedures are done in accordance with the study protocol and ethical guidelines
  • Oversight of physical examination measurements, phlebotomy, and specimen processing performed by our clinical research unit staff
  • Completion of training for cardiovascular measurements which the candidate would then obtain on study participants Communication with study participants to schedule study visits and promote study retention
  • Working with internal and external study monitors to ensure that proper documentation of all study procedures and administrative requirements
  • Primary collection of study data, data entry, and database management
  • Assisting faculty with study development including creation of data collection tools and promotional materials
  • Preparing for and attending the 1-2x/month Obesity Hypertension clinic to facilitate patient transfer between providers, to facilitate consenting of patients in a registry, to assist with cardiovascular assessments.
  • Opportunities for data analysis and contribution to scholarly products

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in related discipline. Some related experience. Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred qualifications:

One year prior experience working in clinical research is preferred. 

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Excellent computer skills and organizational skills a must as well as attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of software, including Microsoft Word and Excel is needed.
  • Requires outstanding verbal communication and interpersonal skills with participants, Principal Investigators, and other team members. Interest in working with mentally ill/disadvantaged populations needed.
  • Must be highly motivated, organized, personable, willing to learn, responsible, reliable, and efficient.
  • Must be comfortable working with patient populations.

Any specific physical requirements for the job: 

  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time. 
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. 
  • Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm, for example, using a keyboard. 
  • Communication skills using the spoken word and written word. 
  • Ability to see within normal parameters. 
  • Ability to hear within normal ranges. 
  • Ability to move about/travel distances easily and quickly.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
