About the opportunity 

The University of Sydney and Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) are seeking applications for the new conjoint position of Professor of Public Health (Prevention & Health Promotion), based at Westmead Hospital.

WSLHD supports the health of over 1 million residents of Western Sydney and the field in which the successful applicant will conduct their research will be the population of Western Sydney which is culturally diverse and growing rapidly. The Westmead Precinct’s large-scale redevelopment and other developments within WSLHD closely involve the University of Sydney and include a focus on population health, through a network of five hospitals and over 800 specialist services. This diverse population with significant pockets of financial and social disadvantage produces a range of complex health and social needs for individuals, families and communities. Increasingly, a focus on achieving optimal outcomes through an integrated whole-of-system way of working has resulted in the broadening of partnerships through service delivery reform to include key human service and justice agencies including but not limited to NSW Family and Community Services (FACS), NSW Department of Education, NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet, NSW Juvenile Justice, and the NSW Police Force; with a focus on the consumer and the community and a commitment to improve health outcomes especially for vulnerable populations.

We are seeking an outstanding senior academic with a strong track-record in public health intervention research and evaluation.

The successful applicant will establish and lead an academic unit of the School of Public Health located at the Westmead Hospital Precinct which is the largest health precinct in NSW and is undergoing a $1.2Bn+ re-development in anticipation of doubling its activity.

We encourage applications from suitably qualified candidates with expertise in public health prevention and program evaluation, and who have experience engaging with health services in pursuit of improved public health.

A PhD or equivalent degree in a field relevant to public health is essential.

Term and remuneration

The position is fixed-term for five years on a full-time basis, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. A salary package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position will be negotiated.
